Best Ankle Holsters

A handgun holster is designed to securely hold a handgun on your body. It prevents the gun from sliding around when you are moving. This is critical to law enforcement officers who may need to chase criminals. The holster is fitted on the body so the gun can be easily reached and quickly drawn. The holster protects the weapon from damage, also.

An ankle holster provides a method of securing a secondary weapon. Law Enforcement Officers like to have a backup weapon, in case their primary weapon fails, or empties. An ankle holster is sometimes referred to as a boot holster.

You have probably seen an ankle holster in action on your favorite crime drama. The police officers’ gun is knocked out of his hand, but he quickly grabs his secondary weapon from his ankle before the criminal can shoot him. This may be a fictitious example, but a police officer will confirm, a secondary weapon can be life-saving.

The ankle holster is also great for concealing your firearm. They are small, easy to conceal, and comfortable. Here are a few great ankle holsters.

Bear Armz added a second retention strap to give you room for an extra magazine for your weapon. The holster is made with comfortable neoprene material and uses Velcro straps to adjust the size and to secure the holster to your leg. It can handle a wide range of firearms including:

  • Glock 42, 43, 33, and others.
  • M&P Shield 9mm
  • Bodyguard 380
  • Ruger LCP
  • Sig Sauer
  • And many others

The advantage of carrying an extra magazine is what makes this holster special.

The holster has an ambidextrous design so you can wear it on either leg or choose whether you want a right hand or left-hand draw from each leg.

The cost and value of this ankle holster are reflected by the two retention straps that ensure no slipping when fitted correctly and the fact that it is adjustable for both ankle and calf support.

This ankle holster is reasonably priced, especially for a holster providing dual retention straps and ambidextrous use. The holster will fit calves up to 16.5” and ankles from 8” to 13”.

  • Second retention strap for an extra magazine.
  • Anti-slip design.
  • Fits snugly and is easy to conceal under your pant legs.

LIRISY built their ankle holster using comfortable neoprene, which is more breathable than leather. They added a comfort pad at the end of the firearm barrel to reduce painful rubbing. The adjustable calf strap allows a secure and comfortable fit on almost any leg. They offer the holster in two different sizes to accommodate larger legs. The holster fits snugly and stays confidently in place.

The LIRISY holster can handle firearms up to 6.5” in length. It works with the most common choices for secondary weapons.

  • Added padding to prevent rubbing.
  • Quiet snap closure allows for the quiet drawing of a weapon.
  • Ambidextrous design.
  • Neoprene material is comfortable and provides a no-slip fit.

3. Uncle Mike’s Off-Duty and Concealment Kodra Nylon Ankle Holster – Best Value

Uncle Mike's Off-Duty and Concealment Kodra Nylon Ankle Holster#ad
  • Right hand model works inside left leg; left hand model is for inside...
  • Nylon web retention strap with reinforced thumb break

Compared to our first two choices, the Uncle Mike’s Holster is small. It is made from soft nylon and designed for better concealment. The soft nylon feels good against your leg. The holster uses a hook and loop fastener to adjust the fit. It is designed for small to medium sized firearms and provides superior concealment. The material absorbs moisture but keeps it off of your weapon. The padding protects your leg from your weapon.

The Kodra Nylon allows for a slimmer design than neoprene, which is where this holster shines. It provides great weapon security, without added bulk.

The holster uses a combination of a nylon retention strap and a thumb break for weapon security. It provides the ability to draw the weapon quickly but keeps the gun from sliding or coming loose.

This holster is a little higher priced due to better quality materials and improved concealment. It comes highly recommended by law enforcement officers who trust this holster to secure their backup weapons. The price of the holster varies depending on the size you need.

  • Holds a wide range of small to medium-sized firearms.
  • Soft nylon provides good padding and comfort.
  • Hook and Eye adjustment provide a secure fit.
  • Easy to use
  • Provides good weapon security and quick draw capability.
  • Need to be aware of attire worn for ease of use
  • While the holster is easy to conceal, you must still wear loose-fitting pants for easy draw.
  • Not as easy to use when standing, easier to use from kneeling position.

Are you having trouble finding an ankle holster for your weapon? The Ultimate Ankle Holster by Comfort Tac may be your best choice. It is limited to a 6.5” length but deals with .38, .45, .357, 9mm, 10mm, .22, and a variety of other calibers.

The holster comfortably holds a Ruger LCP, Sig Sauer P238, or a Glock 42 or 43.

This is an inexpensive ankle holster which still provides excellent comfort and weapon security.

Comfort Tac used high-grade neoprene to provide comfort and a good fit. Neoprene provides a good fit without the pinching feels elastic bands cause. Neoprene does not cause skin irritation like some holsters. The holster includes added padding to eliminate painful rubbing from your weapon. It provides great value at a low price.

ComfortTac used an elastic retention strap with a metal snap. They felt this combination provided easier use and less noise when retrieving your weapon. This style of closure reduced the risk of someone grabbing your weapon during a fight.

The holster is not designed for longer weapons. If your gun is over 6.5” in length, it may fit in the holster, but will run on your leg and may cause pain. It is primarily for compact and sub-compact weapons.

The elastic retention strap may not be as durable as other straps we have looked at. This may be the trade-off for the lower price on this holster.

The Comfort Tac Ultimate Ankle Holster is ambidextrous. You may have noticed our choices focus on ambidextrous holsters, due to their convenience and flexible use.

However, you would have to choose from two sizes.

The ComfortTac comes in two different sizes. It is available with a 15” band, which fits ankles up to 13” in size. The 17” band will fit ankles up to 15”. Make sure you choose the right size to avoid slippage.

  • Ambidextrous design
  • Neoprene band provides comfort.
  • Quiet release.
  • Low-cost option
  • Elastic retention strap may become loose with usage.
  • Made for guns up to 6.5” length only.

5. Pro-Tech Outdoors Ankle concealed Holster Fits The S&W Bodyguard 380 with Laser

Pro-Tech Outdoors Ankle Concealed Holster Fits The S&W Bodyguard 380 with Laser#ad
  • For Right Hand Only
  • Adjustable nylon velcro strap to secure your weapon.
  • Outer layer is cordura ballistic nylon
  • Has Elastic and Velcro closure.
  • Stitched with strong bonded nylon and double stitched at pressure...

This Pro-Tech ankle holster is priced reasonably. It is about the same price as the ComfortTac. It is a good choice if you are trying to find a budget option for a high-quality holster.

Pro-Tech used a combination of Cordura Ballistic Nylon with a vinyl vapor barrier on the holster. The barrier keeps moisture off of your gun, which is too frequently an issue with ankle holsters.

The holster has foam padding to protect your leg and ankle from gun rubs. The nylon lining provides a smooth feel against the skin.

The holster is built strong with nylon stitching which is doubled up at any pressure points to increase durability and security. Fabric edges are all turned under and sealed to make sure the nylon does not fray.

Pro-Tech used a Velcro and nylon strap retention system. This provides great weapon security and makes it nearly impossible for another person to steal your gun.

The strap is adjustable to fit a variety of weapons and to eliminate weapon slippage. The Velcro closure is hidden under webbing to keep it from picking up lint, threads, and other trash.

The holster does have a bit of an awkward tilt when you bend your leg, which may cause the butt of your weapon to show

One more disadvantage about this holster is its draw version. You can use only to use the right-hand draw version.

This is not an ambidextrous holster. The link above is for the right-hand draw the ONLY version. If you need a left-hand draw, you will need to check with Pro-Tech for the model number.

  • Velcro protected by webbing
  • Vapor barrier protects the weapon from moisture.
  • Foam padding for comfort.
  • Nylon stitching for durability
  • Affordable price
  • Gun butt may be exposed when bending.
  • Not ambidextrous

This ankle holster is American-made and I consider it to be the best one that is currently available since it offers so many advantages. It isn’t surprising that it is constantly on the bestseller’s list at so many online retail stores these days.

This is a very popular holster among the military and law enforcement officers in terms of back-up guns, mainly due to the fact that it suits the Glocks 33, 27, and 25 calibers. Those guns are very dependable and deserve the best ankle holster available to keep them secure.

The Galco Ankle Glove is tested for quality and durability and always receives very high ratings. Basically, the holster is made from black saddle leather and a sheepskin lined neoprene band. It has a Velcro closure that firmly secures your gun, as well as a thumb break retention strap that keeps your gun securely in place.

If you have thicker ankles, this one should fit nicely since its neoprene band has been designed to fit ankles that have a diameter up to 13 inches. The neoprene sleeve also helps to ensure there is no slippage since it will conform well to your leg.

It is highly concealable underneath loose jeans, and is comfortable and won’t chafe your ankle. Based on certain reviews, even wading through water, the holster will stay in place and this is a good thing since Glocks still can work even after being immersed in water.

  • The leather is long-lasting
  • Able to draw quickly
  • Good firearm retention due to detailed molding and Velcro snap
  • Your ankle is protected against the holster
  • Leg band does not move around so that your leg will not get sore
  • The Velcro might alert bad guys you are drawing your backup gun.
  • For an oversized rubber grip, the Velcro is not long enough.

Why Ankle Carry?

Although it can definitely more difficult and time-consuming to draw from ankle carry than drawing from your hip, there are certain benefits that ankle carry have to offer.

First of all, for concealed carry, it is a good idea to have a backup gun. If you end up in a life or death situation, what if for some reason your main gun malfunctions or is rendered useless? If that were to occur, then you will know that at least there is another option for you to rely on.

There are also certain places and situations where it might be beneficial to carry on your ankle. For example, if you are sitting down – for example, in a restaurant or where you work – a pistol and an ankle holster might be easier to access than having a pistol in your waistband. The same is true if you are facing a carjacking situation and you are sitting in your car.

Some people might also find themselves in a certain situation where it might be impossible or impractical to wear an OWB or IWB holster, but where it might be feasible to wear an ankle holster. For example, if you need to carry while wearing a formal suit at work, but the suit does not accommodate wearing a 1.5-inch wide gun belt with it which is the standard size for gun belts. After all, you are not able to hold a holster and pistol using a dress belt. When you carry a gun on your ankle, although it is not as good as carrying it on your waistband, in this type of situation it can be a very viable option for you.

Buying Guide

It may be harder than you think to find the best ankle holster that is available in the market. There are many different models that are available. However, not all of them are really efficient. In this section, we will be discussing ankle holsters, and the most essential features to look for.

This might be the most critical factor when choosing an ankle holster. If a gun holster is not designed adequately, there may be some risks involved which could be imaginable.

How should an ankle holster be designed?

  • It shouldn’t have any design flaws that may cause accidental trigger movement.
  • During drawing and holstering it should prevent disengagement of the safety mechanism of the gun.
  • To prevent misfires it should have the ability to secure the gun’s hammer.
  • The fit of the holster on the gun should be exact and not too fit and not too loose that can cause a failure.
  • The holster’s security features like the thumb break and retention strap should be designed to be adjustable so that it can hold guns that are of different dimensions.

Comfort is one of the most critical features to look for when shopping for an ankle holster. If it isn’t comfortable, the chances that you will wear it often is quite slim, and you may end up not wearing it at those times when it really matters the most.

Ankles holsters are not all designed the same. The support band is one of the major design differences. Most holsters these days utilize neoprene support bands since neoprene is both comfortable to wear and durable. However, there are some manufacturers that rely still on elastic bands for supporting their holsters. However, the problem that elastic bands have is, in the beginning, they are very comfortable, but after you have worn them for a while they start to stretch out and become inefficient.

Although neoprene bands usually are comfortable on their own, there are some manufacturers that will really make an effort to improve their comfort level. Some add in an extra lining on the side of the neoprene that contacts your skin directly. The lining may be out of soft materials such as sheepskin.

Other manufacturers insert foam layers inside of the neoprene, which makes it more comfortable for wearing a long time. The foam increases the comfort level of the holster, but it protects it against shocks and moisture also.

The way that a holster fits on your body is as important and critical as how comfortable it is while you wear it. You will need to ensure the holster fits your gun and leg correctly so that the gun is held securely to your body. If an ankle holster does not fit properly it can become a problem, which can range from causing a minor skin irritation up to something serious like your gun end up in somebody else’s possession.

Many ankle holsters either have a double band or single band that is used for positioning the holster onto your leg. Single band holsters are intended only for lightweight handguns and shouldn’t be used with a heavier gun. Double band ankle holster may be used for bigger guns since it has two contact points on your body that will stop the holster from sliding and slipping around the leg.

An ankle holster must secure snuggly to your leg and feature a non-slip design. That helps to ensure the holster attaches firmly to your leg. You shouldn’t have to attach a holster so tight to your leg that it starts cutting the blood flow off to your feet. The holster should also not feel loose when you are wearing it. The holster needs to have a fit and snug feeling that isn’t too tight or loose on your leg.

Along with having the right fit on your leg, a holster also needs to have a non-slip design to make sure it stays in place. Your leg naturally flexes while you are jogging, walking, or sitting. As you are moving around, your leg causes the holster to contract and stretch as you are moving around and walking. Eventually, the holster’s material might start stretching and lose the grip that it has on your leg. That will cause a holster to start chafing your skin and your gun to start bouncing around.

It is very important for the holster to maintain a tight fit on the gun. You do want to be able to quickly withdraw the gun from the holster when you need it, but usually, you will want to ensure the holster keeps your gun secure. your gun shouldn’t be too small or too large for your holster that will cause it to not correctly fit into the holster. You also need to ensure the gun isn’t too heavy for your holster. You always want to buy an ankle holster that is right for the gun you are intending to carry in your holster.

It also very important how the ankle holster maintains position. A good holster maintains its position without it sliding or wobbling even while you are running. In order to achieve that, there are various solutions offered by manufacturers.

Velcro and Neoprene – This solution is the most popular one that manufacturers have in order to keep an ankle holster into place while you are moving. Neoprene bands wrap around the ankle, and a Velcro strap holds it in place. It is a popular solution since it is very easy to implement and also fairly comfortable.

When you are looking for a holster to buy that relies on a Velcro and neoprene system, then be sure to double check the length of its strap, and you measure your ankle’s circumference properly. Neoprene, unlike other materials, does not stretch so over it won’t be more comfortable if you buy one that is too small for you.

Nylon Straps – These are fairly popular, but not many manufacturers rely on them. The main problem that nylon straps have is they frequently have sharp edges. Whenever you are wrapping your holster around your ankle everything will appear to be fine, but whenever you are running or walking the edges will dig in your leg. That can be really uncomfortable, so, therefore, many manufacturers have turned to other solutions.

Calf Straps – These offer a good way to ensure your ankle holster stay in the same position whenever you are wearing them. A vertical strap connects calf straps to an ankle holster, and wrap around the calf at a height that is adjustable.

The major advantage to using this kind of strap is they redistribute the weight of the pistol over a bigger surface so that your ankle doesn’t bear all of the weight on its own. That can increase your level of comfort and make the holster more stable as you are moving also.

One disadvantage of wearing this kind of strap is that after time they can start to become uncomfortable. If your legs are sweaty they may chafe your skin. They also can interfere with how your leg usually flexes and makes them uncomfortable.

The main thing an ankle holster is used for is to hold a sidearm. Holsters are equipped with many features, such as several pockets for extra things such as a knife or a gun magazine. Just make sure you inspect the pockets of ankle holsters before you decide which one to buy. All of the pockets should be of high quality and suit your needs.

Choose a holster that has the ideal number of pockets. Another thing you want to do is feel inside the pockets. This will help you determine whether or not they are large enough to hold your items.

Check the pocket that is designed to hold the gun, as this is the most important pocket of all. Consider a few things when inspecting this pocket. For starters, the pocket should be of good size and it shouldn’t be too small or big for your sidearm.

Your gun should be secured when it is placed in the pocket, and check to see how fast you can remove the gun because if an emergency arises, then you need to be able to remove it quickly. You don’t want to be in an emergency and not be able to remove it from your holster. Always check the pockets when shopping for a holster.

Materials Matter

The support a holster provides is important. However, the material it is made from is important too. With that said, below are a few types of materials to consider when buying a holster:

Leather – Leather isn’t always the popular choice when it comes to ankle holster, but they are still worth considering. Holsters made with leather are comfortable to wear and they are durable. The finish is nice too and will protect the holster from water.

Another benefit of leather holsters is it won’t damage your gun. Leather holsters have an interior that is lined with leather and they fit around the gun like a glove. Many come with a retention strap, which is designed to keep the gun secured.

Nylon – Nylon is a popular choice and it offers a number of advantages. One of them is the material is cheaper than leather. Nylon holsters can also be durable, but this really depends on who made them and what their build is like.

There are nylon holsters that have stitches that have been reinforced. This means they are durable. There are also some models that have retention straps.

You want to choose a holster that is good at wicking away moisture. It should be breathable too. You don’t want your leg to work up a massive sweat because this can become uncomfortable. Instead, the holster should keep your leg cool and dried, which will prevent a heat rash from forming and it will prevent chaffed skin.

Furthermore, a holster that has good breathability is comfortable to wear. It also reduces odors and smells when you sweat. This is why you want a high quality holster.

Another reason why it’s important to choose a breathable holster is it can prevent bacteria from building up, and bacteria love heat. You don’t want bacteria or microbes to grow on your skin. In fact, this could be harmful.

Plus, bacteria can lead to the holster smelling bad. As time goes by, your holster could end up smelling more like a gym bag and removing the odor could be difficult to do. This is why you should pay close attention to the breathability of a holster.

Holsters are available in a range of designs, and the one you choose will depend on your personal preferences. Some come with hook/loop adjustments and there are a few that can be worn right over your boots. These are only a few examples of the different holster designs out there.

The holster you choose should have good adjustable features. There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to this. The tightness of the holster, the looseness and the thickness are a few. The bottom line is your holster should be very adjustable and versatile because this can determine how comfortable the holster is to wear.

You want a holster that is easy to conceal your weapon because this is the whole point of owning an ankle holster. You don’t want people to know there’s a gun on your ankle. Concealment is an important feature to look for in an ankle holster, so try one on before you decide to buy a holster. Make sure it’s not bulky or bulging from your jeans because this defeats the purpose of owning one.

There is a big price difference between ankle holsters of different brands and materials. Sometimes leather holsters cost more than nylon holsters and other times it’s the reverse. Generally speaking, leather holsters tend to cost more than nylon holsters.

Pay attention to the prices when shopping for holsters. You want to take a close look at each holster to see what they offer. In most cases, it’s the more expensive holsters that are better, due to their reliability and durability. Remember, price isn’t everything when it comes to holster, but it will play a major role in whether or not you buy a specific holster.

Drawing a gun from an ankle holster is generally not easy. You should exercise regularly because this will help you get used to wearing a holster. Also, there is nothing concrete that can help you decide which holster offers the best draw.

The good news is you can look at the holster and see if it matches the hand you draw with. If it does, then choose that model because it will likely be your best option. Just make sure you compare as many holsters as possible before settling on one, and remember to read reviews because you want to weigh the pros and cons of each holster you’re researching and you’ll want to learn about other people’s experiences with the holsters.

Wearing and Practicing with an Ankle Holster

Just purchasing a carry-ankle holster that is concealed is really not enough. Knowing how to use it properly and get the best from this product is what you need to be looking at. Here are a few considerations when you use the best ankle holster. These include:

  • It needs to fit comfortably around your ankle that you do not feel any discomfort when you carry it around with you. Too tight or too loose holsters may cause problems for the task at hand.
  • Before you make a decision on whether a holster matches up to your requirements, you should practice drawing out your gun from the holster into the aiming position. You need to record the actual time while practicing this activity.
  • The average time to draw a weapon out of a holster should be about 1.5 seconds before you are able to determine that you are a user that is proficient when it comes to your weapon. When this goal is served then you can then be assured that the conceal ankle holster matches up to your needs perfectly.
  • You should also attempt to draw your gun from your holster from different positions. This is going to ensure your enrichment and efficiency when it comes to your overall performance.
  • An ankle holster is designed to hold a weapon from the inside part of your ankle, and you need to ensure that it always remains in this position and that the holster’s retention is always maintained. This will make sure that your overall performance is always accurate.
  • Your instincts are one of the major factors that will decide on your performance. The quicker that you are able to draw the firearm and with ease will be the deciding factor on your efficiency in your job. You might need some practice in order to lower your timing when action is required before you will feel confident in calling yourself a true professional and that you can use your concealed-carry weapon with confidence. Practicing is the only factor that will help you to improve performance.

How to Draw Yoru Firearm from an Ankle Holster: Tips from The Professionals

Drawing a gun from an item like an ankle holster will be different. This involves a lot of practice to obtain mastery over it. In adverse situations, this method could result in staying alive or dying for that person. The professionals typically suggest two techniques to draw a weapon out of an ankle holster. These include:

Kneel Down

You can store your gun on the outside or inside part of the ankle. In order to quickly access the firearm, you need to drop down into the kneeling position and draw it out ready for firing. You may want to use the ankle holster on your strongest leg or position the holster in a place that is suitable for your strongest arm to reach. This will mean if you happen to be right-handed, position the holster on the right ankle or leg on the right-hand side. If you wear your holster over your pants, it will be easier to access.

However, if you prefer to conceal your weapon, then you will be forced to remove by taking it upwards, by revealing the holster in order to gain access to your pistol. Keep in mind that you need to be quick when you do this. For this reason, you need to practice regularly.

The Ayoob Method

This is also called the Step Out method. From the standing position, deceive your attacker or opponent by showing the action of tepping out? While stepping out, never take your sights off your attacker. While you do this your pants will move up and you are offered with the opportunity to draw your firearm fast. Now bend slightly so that you can draw out your gun. You are now able to shoot your attacker from a standing position.

When it comes to ankle holsters you have to practice. And this means practicing until you get it right and to gain more agility. If you are not prepared to practice or you do not feel comfortable with getting your weapon out fast enough, then an ankle holster is not a suitable choice for you.
