Best Fitness Trackers for Kids
When addressing health issues, we tend to only include children in eating health discussions but not fitness as much. However, in addition to having the right diet, it is highly recommended by medical professionals that children get an hour of physical activity at least. Exercise and the proper diet can not only make your children healthy but also make them focused, alert, and protect them against one of the most infamous epidemics in the country – obesity.
All of us were kids in the past and know how hard it can be to get a child to focus. When it comes to exercising, fitness trackers are our new best friend. Fitness trackers record the physical activity progress of kids while keeping them engaged to perform these activities. Also, kids love techy and colorful gadgets, and therefore fitness trackers are one of the best tools you can use to get them to exercise. Fitness trackers also make parents lives easier by helping them get more involved with the health of their children and identify potential problems earlier.
1. Garmin vívofit jr 2, Kids Fitness/Activity Tracker, 1-year Battery Life, Adjustable Band – Editor’s Choice & Best Seller
- Swim-friendly kids activity tracker with Star Wars theme
- Kid-tough adjustable band, features a customizable color screen and 1+...
- Syncs with free mobile app, which includes chore management and...
- Kids Advance in bb-8’s adventure: A Star Wars story app adventures...
- Tracks steps, sleep and 60 minutes of daily recommended activity
Most of the same features and specifications of the original model come with the Vivofit Jr 2. However, there are certain areas that have been improved significantly, and arguably do justify the decision of producing a follow-up version.
Similar to the original Vivofit Jr., a 0.39” x 0.39” display is used by this device. However, the difference is that it has been upgraded by Garmin to a color display. That upgrade is very welcome since the black and white display was one of the major drawbacks or the original model.
The Jr 2 color display is also much improved and makes the entire device feel a lot more child-oriented than it was already, and that is saying quite a lot. However, one criticism of this display is that the size was not increased, which was also a slight drawback to the original device.
The tracking capabilities of this model are almost identical to the original device so that wasn’t an area that Garmin really saw as needing to be improved. That is difficult to argue with since plenty of functionality was already offered by the original Vivofit Jr. when it comes to tracking features. A heart monitor would have been a potential improvement but normally those are only seen on fitness trackers that have been designed for both adults and children.
Also, the mobile app is basically the same with the exception of one important addition. There are new bands on this upgraded model that are linked to specific adventures that your kid can participate in on the app. These adventures vary depending on the specific band that your child has. However, to unlock even more adventures you can also purchase separate bands.
Although that is a cool feature that is offered, it is disappointing that you can only unlock the adventure by spending more money since the app’s full features are basically locked behind a paywall.
The same construction and design of the original model are featured on the Vivofit Jr 2. That isn’t too surprising since that is another thing that didn’t really need to be improved. Instead, Garmin partnered with Disney to release a broad selection of bands based on various Disney movie characters. That is a very nice touch and provides children with many more design choices.
Garmin has made many necessary improvements to the original model. However, lacking a heart rate monitor and the small screen size is still somewhat disappointing. Also, here is the issue of needing to buy multiple bands to unlock the app’s full features, however, that might not be a problem for everybody.

This model is the first kids’ fitness tracker made by Garmin. The Vivofit Jr, like the Vivofit Jr 2, comes with an elastic band that is easy to wear and keeps the device securely in place so that it does not get broken or lost. It comes with more generic brands that are tied to a specific theme, unlike version 2.
The model comes with a simple display that uses one button for accessing all of the device’s features. After it is connected with the mobile app, it can be customized to your kid’s profile and synced with the Vivofit so that it displays your child’s name and their progress.
Parents are able to create rewards and tasks that can be completed to get access to the coins. The coins can be used to buy rewards like choosing what to eat for breakfast or to get ice cream.
The profiles can help parents monitor their child’s fitness levels and their sleep schedules as well. The Adventure Trail app allows the entire family to stay active.
Another excellent setting that can be used by parents is to use preset timers for various tasks. For example, a thirty-minute timer could be set for cleaning their room or a two-minute timer to brush their teeth. The features can help children stay on task and be rewarded after completing their chore.
The Vivofit Jr is an excellent option if you are looking for a fitness tracker that is budget-friendly. It is lacking in the games and themed adventures that are offered by the Vivofit Jr. However, they are very similar otherwise.
4. LeapFrog LeapBand
- Experience the first activity tracker made for kids - LeapBand is fit...
- Preload LeapBand with 50 active challenges that get kids moving, like...
- Parent controls on LeapFrog Connect make it easy to set play times,...
- Encourages active play, nurturing and healthy choices.
- Ages 4-7 years.
This activity tracker from Leapfrog is more game-oriented compared to the Vivofit Jr 2 or Fitbit Ace. Although it is less expensive than a majority of fitness trackers, it is still an attractive and color tracker that will keep children motivated to remain active.
Instead of simply tracking steps, the device gets children to move by setting a list of various physical challenges up to gain a type of currency that is called ‘jewels’ once they have completed the challenges. The currency lets them take care of their choice of virtual pet to clothe, clean, and feed.
Children can choose between several different pets including a unicorn, robot, penguin, panda, monkey, dragon, dog, or cat. Children can earn toys to give to their pets by performing different activities so that their pet is kept happy.
The watch initially comes with ten pre-loaded games and an additional 40 can be unlocked by achieving levels in gameplay. The “Petathlon” app allows your children to compete in mini-games as their pet. Some of these games teach kids about nutritious, healthy foods that can give them an early start in eating healthy.
Parents are provided with complete control over when the various modes are activated. The default state is “Move Mode” which allows the child’s watch to track motion. Whenever your child isn’t interacting with the Leapband, the screen goes back to “Move Mode.”
When the watch is in “Player Mode” the child has access to sounds, challenges, and games. “Quiet Mode” banishes all gameplay and sound so kids can have quiet time or go to sleep, and when activated only shows the clock.
When your child’s LeapBand is hooked up to your computer, there is an app that has a setting that enables the parent to determine when your child is able to access play modes based on the age of the kid.
5. Fitbit Zip Wireless Activity Tracker
- Tracks steps, distance and calories burned
- Syncs automatically to your computer or select bluetooth 4.0...
- Set goals, view progress and earn badges; Battery type: 3 volt coin...
- Share and compete with friends throughout the day
- Free iphone and android application
Compared to many other similar devices, the Fitbit Zip is a bit different in that it is not a band-style of fitness tracker. It uses a clip instead that you can attach to different clothing items, like a pocket or belt. The design has both advantages and disadvantages, which we will be discussing in a minute but it might be a better option for children who don’t like wearing anything on their wrist.
It features an LCD display which can provide longer battery life compared to OLED panels. It uses a touch screen as well. The display is black and white. That isn’t ideal but looks okay and Fitbit has included some additional visuals like footsteps and a smiley face to make things more interesting. Still, a color display would have been nice.
The Zip has excellent battery life. The device can last for around 6 months before it needs to have a new battery installed. A traditional-style 3v coin battery is used so it should be too difficult to replace them. That means that you don’t have to plug the Zip in to recharge it every week. It is really a matter of personal preference which is the best option for you. So you can decide whether you prefer that implementation or not.
The device has decent tracking capabilities but they aren’t amazing. It tracks your calories burned, distance, and steps, but not your sleep, unfortunately. Given that it’s a clip-on device that isn’t very surprising. However, having a sleep tracker would be very beneficial. There isn’t a heart monitor either. That isn’t surprising either since it is not a band-style tracker, but when comparing it with some other trackers it still is a downside and one that you need to consider when making your final choice.
The same Fitbit app is used by the Zip that the ACE uses. That means you can track your kid’s process the same way more or less. Therefore, the Zip trumps a majority of the other trackers in our guide when it comes to smartphone integration since the Fitbit app is considered to be the best one that is available.
The Zip’s constructed has been thought out carefully. The clip uses silicone, which provides an extra protection layer for the tracker. The tracker and its internals are made out of thermoplastic. The Fitbit Zip overall is a really durable tracker that can survive a majority of impacts. Also, it is water resistant against splashes, sweat, and rain. However, it is not recommended that you use the Zip while you are swimming, since the device is not waterproof, just water resistant. When looking for a fitness tracker make sure you know what the difference is between the two.
For some children, this may be a better option compared to the more common band-style trackers. It may not have been specifically designed for children, but still ticks a majority of the boxes when you are looking for a good kid’s tracker. It is definitely one to strongly consider.

This fitness tracker, unlike the Vivofit fitness trackers, has not specifically been designed for children. However, it is still marketed as being a tracker that children can use which is why we included it in our guide.
The device has a large and nice display, which is an issue that the Vivofit Jr has. It uses OLED technology, which means that blacks are very black, and the colors are vibrant.
However, that does seem somewhat unnecessary since it is a black and white display. So the blacks will be very black, but there isn’t any vibrancy really to produced so it seems a bit pointless in some ways. OLED panels also have a tendency to drain battery life more quickly than LCD panels do, which smaller devices like wearables usually prefer. However, it does have a large and nice display with the information looking very crisp.
However, there is another issue about the displays related to children interacting with the device. Since the device has not been designed primarily for children, it doesn’t really include any features tailored to kids. A child can definitely use the device, but they won’t find any dinosaurs on-screen or any of the other kinds of visuals that are offered by the Vivofit Jr series and which can keep them engaged and active – which is one of the main points of a fitness tracker for kids.
The device has a decent battery life but it isn’t amazing. On a full charge, it should 5 to 10 days depending on how it is used. That isn’t too bad, but you have to wonder whether they could have improved that if they had instead used an LCD panel.
This device has excellent tracking capabilities and is its main selling point, especially when you consider its price. It is one of just a few fitness trackers that can be used by kids that comes with a heart rate monitor. Of course, it will track sleep and movement as well, but having a heart rate monitor is a very big benefit in terms of the device’s functionality.
The companion app for the device is a letdown. It is a very basic app compared to other tracker apps out there. Some individuals have also run into problems with synchronization between the app and tracker which has resulted in an inaccurate reading. That has only occurred in a really small percentage of customers but is still something to be aware of.
However, on the positive side, the device has a very good overall design and construction. To begin with, it is IP67-rated, which means you shouldn’t have any problems using the device in any kind of weather. The device can also be worn swimming. Just be aware that it is water resistant only for up to 30 minutes and up to 1 meter.
Overall, when everything is considered, this is an excellent fitness tracker. It is a large, crisp display that provides a lot of functionality, especially for a fitness tracker in this price range. The product does have some aspects that are not that great, like the companion, but overall the tracker is worth the price.

How Do The Kids Fitness Trackers Help Parents?
The fitness tracker is a device that is beneficial to both the child and their parents. While they may be fun and techy, they also work on encouraging and motivating the child to become more active.
It has become harder in this day and age to make sure children are getting enough physical activity in a day. The fitness trackers designed for children can help to promote healthy routines and habits from a much younger age. These trackers can help parents to show their kids that their physical health should be important to them.
Many of the standard models of adult fitness trackers offer these features:
- Goals and reminders
- Monitors heart rate
- Log steps
- Track daily activities in a day
- Tracks the calories burned
The kid’s fitness trackers usually include colorful wristbands and screens, clocks, and notification on how to get active and stay healthy. Parents are also able to download free apps to the fitness tracker and their phone where they can assign their child with a challenge each day.
This can include basic challenges such as wake-up alarms, “remember to move” reminders or program a challenge that awards coins or access to an integrated game. Children will enjoy the tech, the challenges and of course the “screen time”, while parents will really enjoy participating in helping their kids to become physically active.
More and more, parents have started taking advantage of this valuable tool in order to help their kids to get moving and to track other important stats such as sleep patterns and calories used. These fitness trackers can actually assist the entire family on becoming more focused on health.
A Guide To Choosing A Fitness Tracker For Your Child
A majority of trackers come with instructions that advisee you on the recommended ages for use. Apart from these guidelines, it is advisable that you also consider how big the tracker’s buttons are and if they are easy for little fingers to reach out for help or respond to you, and if they can wear it or take it off by themselves. If you are concerned about your child removing the tracker, go for one that has anti-tamper features.
Determine and Set Goals
Before purchasing a kid’s fitness tracker, it is essential that you have an idea of the activities you want your child to do and the target you want them to hit. For instance, you could set a goal of 7,000 to 10,000 steps a day or for them to burn a specific number of calories a day. Fitness trackers are great for motivating exercising and healthy living. If your kiddo is new to exercise, consider buying them a basic step tracker to estimate the number of calories they’ve burned. For advanced-level trackers, go for those that automatically recognize activities or monitor heart-rate.
If you are planning on having your child wear the tracker the entire day, then make sure the fitness tracker you get them is comfortable enough to be worn all day. If you intend to monitor their sleep quality, get a fitness tracker with a sleep monitoring feature, but ensure that it’s comfortable and can be worn even while sleeping. If the tracker bothers your kid, the first thing he’ll do is remove it, increasing his chances of losing it. So, before buying a tracker, consider testing it with your kid first and see if he finds it comfortable or not.
Most activity and fitness trackers have a one-size-fits-all feature. The circumference length of the straps usually determines the fit of the tracker.
Band Type and Material
Most fitness tracker bands are made of silicone as it is durable, and allows some give for growing wrists. At the same time, it will not get easily damaged when exposed to water, sweat, or sun.
When choosing a band style, there are generally two options: one that stretches to fit the wearer’s wrist or the traditional watch-style with clasps. While solid bands are more comfortable for children since they have no buckles are rubbing against their skin, watch-style bands are preferable since they can be adjusted to accommodate your child’s growing wrists.
The best fitness trackers for children are usually high-quality products, especially when it comes to durability. As a parent, you are aware of curious and playful children can be; that is why, when crafting quality products for this group, comfortability and durability are always a priority.
The top-rated fitness and activity trackers for kids are made of sturdy and thick yet lightweight plastic. At the same time, the material used will almost always have stretchy, moldable, and resistant properties to warranty durability and to ensure that the right shape is achieved.
Most kids’ fitness and activity trackers are waterproof, allowing the wearer to go swimming for as long as they want without damaging the tracker. This gives the activity tracker the ability to monitor wet activities too. There is another type of activity and fitness trackers that are sweat proof only. These trackers are mildly waterproof, which means they can withstand splashes, spills, sweat, and rain, but brief periods only. When dipped into water, they stand no chance and normally end up breaking down.
You do not want a fitness tracker that you have to charge every day or one whose charge dies halfway through a day, as that could mean losing all of your kid’s activity data. The best activity trackers for kids are designed to last a long time with some devices offering a couple of months’ worth of battery life while others provide a full year of battery life. However, things like the tracker’s features, usage, and sophistication will determine battery life. It is advisable that you know about the tracker’s estimated or exact battery life before buying. Fitness trackers with sensors and color touchscreens will obviously require frequent charging than ones with slightly fewer features.
One of the most important aspects of a fitness or activity tracker is what it tracks. The primary purpose of fitness trackers is to estimate calories burned and to count steps taken. However, some trackers will even monitor heart-rate, distance covered, and sleep quality. If you want to know how many stair flights your kid climbs every day, get a device that has an inbuilt accelerometer and an altimeter. These are the most universal and essential features you’ll find in fitness trackers. Other features you’ll find on some trackers include a variety of built-in games that will only unlock once your child has achieved set goals and act as entertainment and motivation for your child. They also serve as the activity loggers used to input activities your child should perform and as distance counters. Most trackers come with a small screen that your child can use to view their activity stats and reset.
Buy a Device that You Can Customize
Consider getting a fitness tracker that allows you to input your kid’s name in the display as that will make them have a greater sense of ownership. Similarly, you should consider getting a tracker that offers you the ability to change background graphics and font colors to make it more appealing to your child.
Consider Your Kid’s Favorite Color
Fitness trackers are available in a variety of colors. Therefore, consider getting a tracker in the shade your child loves. If you do not know what their favorite color is, ask.
If possible, go for a child-friendly fitness tracker designed to sync with your smartphone, be it iOS or Android. That way, it will be easy to set your child’s targets and get the results right on your phone.
A majority of fitness trackers have a level of imprecision as their sensors and algorithms count and monitor steps, calories burned, sleep quality, stairs climbed, etc. If you want hard data, then go for a function-specific activity or fitness tracker. Such advanced trackers will give you more precise results and data so you can tell the direction your child is taking.
A fitness tracker that allows you to set perimeter alerts and safety zones with a virtual fence can help you have peace of mind. Geofencing allows you to establish your child is where he or she is supposed to be and notifies you when they are about to leave the boundaries you have set.
If you want to track your kid around your neighborhood or want to keep tabs on him or her during a cross-country visit to their grandma’s, then a GPS-enabled fitness tracker that works for the distance and range you want is what you need to get. Remember that devices that only rely on Bluetooth have limited range and are only suitable for close-proximity tracking.
Alerts and Notifications
GPS tracking devices for kids come with various notification and alert settings. Some update your child’s location every five minutes while others update every 10 seconds. When choosing a GPS tracker, consider how much flexibility you need and how often you want to be updated for different circumstances.
If your child is scared or lost, all they’ll have to do is hit the panic alert or SOS button to instantly alert you or other emergency contacts that they need help. For kids who spend a lot of time on their own on the way extracurricular activities or after school, this is one feature that can prove handy for both you and them.
While sometimes you want to know where your child is, there are other times when you wish you could communicate with them. If you value communication, then a wearable GPS with two-way talk is a great option.
The price for some of the top-of-the-range fitness trackers for children ranges between $30 and $80. How much you spend on a tracker will depend on the quality of the tracker and the features you want it to have. Most of the trackers that offer basic options and features are generally affordable and will get the work done. However, if you want a tracker that provides the quality and features that best suit your child’s needs, then be ready to spend a little bit more.
Tips For Getting Your Kid(s) Active
Buying your kid a fitness tracker is a good idea, but it might not be good enough to get him or her moving.
What do you do?
Consider setting up a challenge for you as a family to get them up and walking. Have a little fun as you try and see which family member will get the most steps in a week or for the day.
Alternatively, you could set a step goal so that if he or she reaches x amount of steps, there’ll be a special reward waiting for them. Some of the activity-tracking watches listed here will even allow you to set challenges for your kids to see how they’re doing and if they’ve earned enough points to get a reward.
Take a different approach. Maybe your kid is not that into organized sports or the idea of having to walk to school, or anywhere else for that matter, bores them. If that is the case, why not use a different approach and have them try something new? You could, for instance, take them rollerblading or skating, rock wall climbing, or sign them up for a karate or dance class.
Invite a friend. Activities usually are way more fun when done with buddies. Have your child invite one of his friends to go for a swim at the local pool, a hike or even a bike ride. Also, find out if you can sign them up for the same class or sport.
Let them choose their adventure. You could also let your kid pick an activity for the entire family. Whether it is hiking a trail or exploring the new city park, they’ll be more likely to participate with fewer complaints, grumbles and moaning if they’re the ones making decisions about where to go. And that leads us to the next point.
Participate. Do not sit by the sidelines! Participate. Be involved in their activity! Taking part in whatever they are doing will not only motivate your kid to be more active, it’ll also help you work out a bit too. Children look up to their parents and follow their lead, so consider making exercise a part of your routine and not a chore.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best steps-a-day target for my child?
You have probably heard that the ultimate goal is 10,000 steps. However, this should be the ultimate goal for adults. So, what about children? According to research, children should be making about the same number of steps – if not more.
Most importantly, children should aim for an hour of moderate-vigorous physical activity every day. This can be by either participating in organized sports like soccer or basketball or playing on the playground. Most children will hit the target in short spurts rather than in one hour altogether.
How accurate are fitness trackers when it comes to counting steps?
No fitness tracker or pedometer can provide the exact number of steps. However, most of them do provide a reasonably good estimate of the number of steps the wearer has taken. There is a reason why this number is not always exact with the main one being fitness trackers are primarily worn on the wrist, so if you do not take a step, but your arm moves, that may end up being registered as a step.
All in all, activity trackers are a great way to get a rough estimate of how much someone has moved in a day.
Are children’s fitness trackers any good?
When used how they are supposed, trackers can be highly-effective in a child’s fitness and educational path. Furthermore, trackers it easier and more effective for parents to track their children’s activity levels. Trackers, unlike parents (who are generally busy), are always tracking a child’s activity progress and sharing it with parents.
Are there any models that have GPS?
Yes, there are several that have GPS. A good example is LETSCOM fitness tracker, which is designed for both kids and adults. This tracker has GPS and streams real-time data to an app or your phone.
