Best Fitness Trackers for Women

What really goes into the best women’s fitness watch?

There are many fitness tracker companies that just “pink and shrink” their products and then call them a woman’s tracker or watch.

However, is that really enough for today’s savvy woman consumer?

Of course not!

Women need to have more than simply a pretty band. Although they do want to have the pretty band along with everything else.

In this article, we will be exploring the features that go into making the best fitness trackers for women and take a close look at the top ones that are an ideal fit for women.

1. Fitbit Charge 2 Heart Rate + Fitness Wristband – Editor’s Choice & Best Seller

Fitbit Charge 2 Heart Rate + Fitness Wristband, Special Edition, Lavender Rose Gold, Large (US Version)
  • PurePulse continuous, automatic wrist-based heart rate tracking to...
  • Maximize your workouts using simplified heart rate zones (Fat Burn,...
  • See call, text & calendar notifications on the OLED display;...
  • Get a better understanding of your fitness level and see how you can...
  • Track all-day activity like steps, distance, calories burned, floors...

The Fitbit Charge 2 succeeds the highly-rated and hugely popular Charge HR. With the introduction of the new model, Fitbit has been able to retain the best parts of the earlier generation, while also adding some new outstanding functionality. The improved notification system, being able to connect to the GPS on your smartphone for mapping your runs, and the new large screen are all welcome new additions to a device that was already very nice.

It still isn’t perfect. We definitely wish that the device was waterproof and that the heart rate tracking for intense exercising was more reliable than it is. We also wish we could return to the previous screen instead of needing to scroll back through all of the screens once again. Also, you have to take your smartphone with you while you are running if you would like to use its GPS functionality. However, overall, we do think it would be difficult to find another device that is this well-suited for most general users at this price point the way the Charge 2 is.

Pros
  • Connected GPS for mapping your runs
  • 24/7 heart-rate monitoring
  • Strong community function to keep your motivation running high
Cons
  • If you do high-intensity training, the accuracy of its heart-rate tracking might not be ideal (although that is true for a majority of wrist-worn devices)
  • No built-in GPS, although your phone’s sensor can be used
  • Cannot shower or swim with the Charge 2

2. Fitbit Flex 2 Smart Fitness Activity Tracker

Fitbit Flex 2 Smart Fitness Activity Tracker, Slim Wearable Waterproof Swimming and Sleep Monitor, Wireless...
  • Track steps, distance, calories burned and active minutes
  • Ultra-thin, removable tracker hides in bands, pendants and bangles,...
  • Swim-proof for tracking swimming, life-proof for wear in the ocean,...
  • SmartTrack automatically recognizes select workouts and records them...
  • Automatically track how long and how well you sleep, and set a silent...

The Flex 2 was released in 2016 and is the first genuine swim-friendly tracker from Fitbit. It is water resistant up to 50 meters and tracks your swimming session’s duration, pace, and distance. It does not provide you with detailed metrics, however, for a casual swimmer, it should be more than sufficient for analyzing your swims.

Flex 2 counts how many laps you have done throughout your workout, the amount of time you have been in the pool, and the total distance you have covered (you will first need to set the length of the pool in the app). Although it does not provide a huge amount of comprehensive data, it is robust and accurate be become the new best friend of the casual swimmer. It is also an excellent sleep and activity tracker out of the water and a great “put-it-on-and-forget-it” type of fitness band.

This model is a great option for casual swimmers. If you are searching for a racker that you can wear every day in the pool and outside of it, then you can’t go wrong at this price if you choose the Flex 2. If you are a dedicated swimmer, you may want to check out more expensive options such as the Apple Watch 2 or Garmin Vivoactive.

Pros
  • Can be worn as a general activity tracker outside of the pool
  • Provides fairly accurate data on duration, pace, and distance
  • Recognizes the 4 most common swimming strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle
  • Water resistant up to 50 meters
Cons
  • A dedicated swimmer may miss certain more highly detailed metrics
  • Doesn’t come with a screen so the Fitbit dash will have to be used to see your results

3. Fitbit Alta Fitness Tracker – Best Value

Fitbit Alta Fitness Tracker, Silver/Plum, Large (6.7 - 8.1 Inch) (US Version)
  • Track steps, distance, calories burned and active minutes
  • See stats and time with a bright OLED tap display
  • Battery life up to 5 days (varies with use and other factors)
  • Automatically track how long and how well you sleep, and set a silent,...
  • Get call, text and calendar notifications at a glance when phone is...

The new Fitbit Altais a stylish fitness tracker that features a small screen. Its firmware connects to the Fitbit App, and it has repackaged features for measuring your burned calories, step, and distance. Live stats and the time are shown on the OLED finger tap display. Some of the product’s other notable features include call and text notifications, calendar, and sleep monitor. The Fitbit Alta can be customized by using other kinds of bands like classic sports, metal, and leather bands. The tracker does not display heart rate, but you are able to sync with your phone.

The slim design of the product makes it look very sleek and without a bulky look. Frequently this is a trade-off with trackers that come with a heart rate monitor. It has a smooth and flat clasp that makes it more comfortable to wear, even when you are sleeping. There are three sizes: Small (for wrists 5.5-6.7 inches), Large for 5.7-8.1 inches) and XL (8.1 to 9.3 inches). One small issue that has been reported is that it has a sensitive screen. So you would need to get used to using the right rhythm for two taps a half a second apart. Lightly tap without using high pressure, quick, and erratic tapping. Overall, if you are looking for a stylish and comfortable standard fitness tracker, you should consider this model.

Pros
  • Sleek appearance, slim design, not bulky
  • A wide selection of bands including classic sports, metal, and leather bands
  • Measures your burned calories, steps, and distance
Cons
  • Sometimes repeated swapping and tapping is needed
  • There is no heart rate monitor

4. Fitbit Blaze Smart Fitness Watch

Fitbit Blaze Smart Fitness Watch, Plum, Silver, Large (6.7 - 8.1 inch) (US Version)
  • See simplified heart rate zones for quickly checking exercise...
  • Use multi-sport tracking to track runs, cardio, cross-training, biking...
  • Enable connected GPS to map your routes and see run stats like pace...

If you have kids, it is essential to stay connected, even during those times when you cannot have your phone right next to you.

Important text messages are displayed on the screen of the Blaze which you can discreetly read during spin class or an office meeting, so you won’t miss anything important.

Combine that with the built-in “Relax” feature, the small size of the fitness watch, and the wide selection of beautiful bands that are available and this might be the very best fitness tracker for women.

Pros
  • Smarttrack feature logs your workouts automatically
  • Compatible with FitStar, to deliver guided workouts on-screen directly to your watch
  • Heart rate monitoring
  • Integrated “relax” feature provides guided breathing exercises
  • Cross-training and yoga setting within the exercise menus
Cons
  • Compared to other Fitbits the battery doesn’t last as long, maybe around two days.

5. Fitbit Versa Smart Watch – Professional’s Choice

The Versa is smaller than the Fitbit Iconic, which makes it a popular option for women.

The Versa also incorporates the new women’s health tracker from Fitbit that tracks a woman’s periods, and the data can be used to find the right eating habits and sleep patterns if you use the Versa to track them.

The data may also be used for predicting upcoming fertility windows and period, but shouldn’t be relied on as contraceptive.

Pros
  • Accurate and improved Heart Rate monitoring
  • Impressive 5-day battery life
  • Light sensor dims the LED as the day grows darker
  • “Relax” feature for tracking stress symptoms
  • Comes with the Fitbit Female Health tracker (premenstrual symptoms and menstrual cycle are tracked).
Cons
  • Isn’t compatible with Spotify

This fitness tracker from Fitbit is a fitness tracking tool that can be used to monitor the number of steps you take per day, your heart rate, and more. Its sleek design the main attraction. The most recent Alta HR is very slim but still contains Fitbit’s PurePulse heart rate technology. A new chip was introduced by the company for its new Altra HR and that minimized both the size as well as the number of components needed. That allows for a design that is slimmer by 25 percent compared to regular wrist trackers. There are two new sleeping features as well; the Slight Insights and Sleep stages. The heart rate sensor is used by the sleep stages to calculate how much you spend in REM, deep, and light sleep, as well as the amount of time that you spend each night awake. Sleep Insights uses the data that Fitbit collects to provide you with personalized guidance on what you can to do improve your sleep.

The battery is also outstanding. On a single charge, it can last for 7 days. The internal heart rate sensor allows you to have an improved experience by allowing you to monitor the calories burned, and also non-step exercises like yoga and spinning. The heart rate zones tell you how hard you are working when doing your daily exercises. It automatically detects or recognizes exercise like biking, running, etc. However, you cannot start workouts manually. No buttons and automatic exercise tracking there are are no on-band controls for manual use.

Pros
  • Features a fashionable and stylish design
  • Ehart rate and all-day fitness tracking
  • Superior battery life
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Although very small, it provides accurate results each time
  • Activity monitoring wristband comes with a secure closure
Cons
  • No button to run through to the various stats it tracks
  • Notifications might be hard to read
  • Not resistant to water

Several female-friendly features are included by a Vivosmart, including a wake-up phone alarm that is loud enough to wake you up, a mindfulness feature which helps you wind down when you are under pressure, and an HR monitor.

  • Tracks your steps, distance moved, calories burned, sleep patterns,...

This model is one of the most popular and beautiful fitness trackers available in today’s marketplace. However, its popularity is based not only on its nice-looking design or the various ways that it can be worn but also for being able to provide women with an informed and simplified report about their overall health which includes monthly cycle or period, pregnancy, sleep, and activity.

This track syncs reliably and quickly although it mainly relies for its functionality on the app. This app includes meditation-style and breathing exercises. Another advantage is its ability to track your sleep and stress. In terms of looks, this tracker features a very cool design that is very attractive. In fact, the small piece looks like it is a piece of jewelry and may be worn as a bracelet, a jewelry pendant, or a clip. That allows you to incorporate it into your daily life.

For daily use, it can be used as a bracelet or clip replacement and clip it on where you are doing more intense exercising. Be aware that the tracker may unhook from the bracelet if it is jiggled while you are sprinting. That can be a bit annoying so you might want to opt for the clip or necklace instead. There are other drawbacks to the tracker besides appearance. The presentation of data and the variables included also help to technologically set it apart. However, it is only a tracker, and therefore there are no automatic pushy suggestions or reminders. In simple terms, the tracker only can tell you that you have a high-stress level but cannot recommend what you can do in order to reduce your stress.

It also tells you how many calories you have burned only during activity since it is unable to differentiate between various activities, such as bicycling or running. It basically only allows you to label and input calories during these times. However, it will not calculate the calories it has for your during the time that you say the other activity was occurring. That is to help ensure that you do not mistakenly cheat your score. It also accurately measures your well-being.

If you would like to have a fitness tracker that allows you as well to know when your fertile days whenever you are attempting to get pregnant, then select the Bellabeat leaf tracker. One of the things that we really love about it that it is more a wellness measure than just a fitness tracker, and tells you when are stressed but not what to do to stop or prevent being stressed out. It does not pop up or automatically sync notification on the app which makes things easier.

Pros
  • Features a sleek and stunning design
  • Equipped with comprehensive technology that really does the job right
  • Comes with an adjustable chain and strap so you can explore various ways it is worn
  • Is user-friendly
  • Provides important health variables for women
  • Convenient to use
  • Projects your stress
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Calculates a more accurate score
Cons
  • Can be easy to miss the vibrating alerts
  • No heart rate monitoring or smartphone notifications; requires the app
  • No display or traditional face for notification pop-ups
  • Some data must be added manually since it does not sync automatically

9. Withings Activité Pop | Activity and Sleep Tracking Watch

Sale
Withings Activité Pop | Activity and Sleep Tracking Watch
  • Nokia Health is now Withings. Same products, same team, same...

This product is a wristwatch that also automatically tracks sleep, step, and activity. It comes with a very reliable replaceable battery not only because it can be used directly from the box but can continue to run for 8 months before it needs to be charged. We really love you can go showering or swimming since it is water-resistant up to 50 meters. The wristwatch syncs automatically with Android and iOS.

In terms of its design, this watch got rid of its polished steel calf leather and sapphire dome on the fancier Activite Withings watch and uses a mineral glass dome, PVD-coated steel, and a silicone strap instead, although they have almost the same features. It performed sleep-tracking and step-counting. Also, it tracks the number of calories burned. It is a Bluetooth-connected fitness tracker beyond that.

This product features a solid construction as well and has fixed an old problem dealing with the crystals shattering easily. However, it isn’t perfect yet. It still has a glitch with syncing and storing data for more than one and a half days. If you sync on a daily basis that might not be a problem for you, but it might become an issue when you are traveling. It also does not measure your heart rate. However, for a standard wristwatch, it is the closest thing there is a Fitbit-style device.

This can be your go-to watch if you would like a regular watch that also performs some semi-intelligent things such as tracking health activities. It the Swatch and Fitbit got marries, the result would be the Activite Pop.

Pros
  • Suitable for both women and men
  • User-friendly
  • Easy to wear and use
  • Features a reliable battery life that doesn’t need to be charged for up to 8 months
  • Is water-resistant, so can be worn in the swimming pool and shower
Cons
  • An app is needed to set the watch which makes it a bit less convenient
  • Does not display other stats other than daily goal progress
  • Does not track your heart rate
  • Does not retain data without syncing for more than a day and a half

10. Misfit Wearables S500BM0RZ Misfit Ray – Fitness + Sleep Tracker with Black Sport Band

Misfit Wearables S500BM0RZ Misfit Ray - Fitness + Sleep Tracker with Black Sport Band (Rose Gold)
  • Vibration alerts for call and text notifications, movement reminders,...
  • Smart button enabled to control connected household devices |...
  • Swim proof, anodized aluminum cylinder with multicolor LED progress...
  • Non-charging, replaceable batteries last up to 6 months
  • NOTE : 1 Misfit Ray can only be linked to 1 account at a time

This is a great accessory that offers a wide range of styling accessories, sleep tracking features and unusual futuristic design. It is not an obvious tracker and its subtle design allows you to dress it up or down as you desire.

Most fitness trackers are not very stylish. Manufacturers for years have primarily focused on functionality, with the design part being mainly just an afterthought. Although that is fine for athletes and sports who spend their lives inside of a job, that may not work as well for people who would like their wrist to have something more stylish on it. But actually, the recent trend has been moving towards the opposite, with style being the focus instead of function. It appears that Misfit Ray has been able to find the ideal balance between a sporty wristband and a fashion accessory.

This model is the ideal choice for somebody who is looking for a stylish yet simple activity tracker. However, it does skimp when it comes to functionality. It still comes with all of the basic metrics, which include being able to measure your swimming and sleep tracking. There are a ton of accessories that are available which makes it very easy to style any want you want.

Pros
  • Battery life up to 6 months
  • Water resistant up to 50 meters
  • Many accessories are available for styling it how you want
  • Can be worn as a wristband or pendant
Cons
  • Changing the bands may be tricky
  • There is no screen, color LEDs are used instead

What Is A Fitness Tracker?

Even though these devices come in a number of sizes, shapes, and styles, the fitness tracker which also goes by the names of an Activity Tracker, is described as a type of multi-purpose device that is generally worn on your wrist.

It works on consistently monitoring your body using different parameters, that usually include how many steps you have taken, your heart-rate, and how long you are active for throughout the day. Certain fitness trackers feature more technical features when compared to others, with the ability to track several different variables.

What Does A Fitness Tracker Actually Do?

The various types of fitness or activity trackers are designed to perform an array of functions, and this varies from one model to the next. They also use different methods, like sensors and electrodes in order to keep track of or record data. Some models even work off light energy in order to monitor the circulation that is occurring in your blood vessels.

The statistics like calories, heart rate, movement patterns, temperature, along with frequency, acceleration, distances, and intensity traveled during such activities is compiled and recorded throughout your day. Some of the fitness trackers even use GPS to achieve highly accurate distance measurements.

All this is then analyzed along with algorithms which results in a comprehensive fitness picture while converting all the data that is collected into useable and more meaningful statistics.

You can use a fitness tracker to keep track of all your workouts, monitor your perspiration levels, along with sending you hydration reminders. Certain models also come with sedentary reminders which helps you to remain active more regularly.

Most of the latest trackers can also give you notifications of emails, messages, and phone calls, they can differentiate between outdoor and indoor UV light, and some even warn you when your UV exposure is high.

Reasons To Use A Fitness Tracker

Fitness or activity trackers are useful motivational tools. When you are provided with feedback consistently on how your body performs, you are able to notice tangible improvements when it comes to your overall fitness, along with a way to chart your progress.

You can also use one of these trackers for optimizing your workouts or training to achieve maximum efficiency. Fitness experts recommend a specific heart rate level when it comes to cardiovascular training, keeping in mind that this number will differ from one person to the next. When you have your own personal monitor it can help you to stay on track.

Some of the fitness trackers also offer information about training ideas and tips for your workouts, and some even feature an integrated training program that you are able to start following. You can also use one of these trackers to set realistic, achievable, and specific goals, along with a way to monitor your overall health.

One of the overlooked advantages associated with fitness trackers is the fact that you are carrying the device on you all the time. It serves as a constant reminder of your fitness goals.

This can encourage you to start developing healthier habits, which will quickly start to become a routine. Most people that use a fitness tracker state that these devices are efficient in helping them to stay on track when it comes to achieving personal fitness goals.

Why You Need A Fitness Tracker?

If you currently live a somewhat sedentary lifestyle, this may result in health problems like increased fatigue, low energy, weight gain, back issues, low stamina, and much more. This usually also has a negative effect when it comes to your mental-health, particularly once you have gained weight which is now stopping you from enjoying the activities that you used to enjoy. When you are more active you will start to feel and look better. Yet finding this motivation can often feel impossible.

A fitness tracker is not the solution to lose weight. It is also not a type of magical weight-loss device. Rather, these devices serve the purpose of guiding you along your fitness and weight-loss journey in the way of offering you with accurate information which will often tell you the reason why you are unable to lose weight. These factors could include sleep patterns that are poor, not enough water consumption, your movements are not enough over the course of a day, or when you are overeating.

When you choose the best fitness tracker for your needs, you will be able to tell where you might have gone wrong and the way to make lifestyle changes for the better to assist you in reaching your goals on how you want to feel and look.

Motivation To Work Even Harder

If you are the type of person that needs motivation and recognition as soon as you have achieved goals for a day, a week, a month or even a year? The fitness trackers not only track activity levels but are also able to alert you as soon as your inactivity levels reach a certain point. This will often give you the encouragement that you need in order to get going to burn a few calories.

Over the last five years, activity trackers have been one of the fun ways for people to track their fitness progress. Dependent on what model you choose, these devices are able to monitor caloric intake, sleep patterns, distance traveled, steps taken, calories burned, and heart rate. Certain models also feature built-in GPS which will accurately map your distance and pace. Certain people still think that fitness trackers are a type of frivolous purchase, yet they can become an essential tool when used properly yo achieve fitness goals you never thought possible. In addition, as soon as you start reaching fitness goals, your tracker will send an instant notification to congratulate you.

The Way They Hold You Accountable

When it comes to a fitness tracker, you are actually in competition with yourself. This device is able to keep a record of your progress along with the goals that you have reached, which will give you the motivation to carry on working harder than you may have done a few days before, to start running a bit faster, or to walk for longer to beat your past records. Research has proven that people that wear these devices are usually able to increase their activity levels by 40% or more.

Customize Your Weight Loss And Fitness Goals

If you already workout regularly you may think that you do not need one of these trackers. If you run or lift weights, then you probably already know that you have to consistently challenge yourself and your body to achieve optimum results. Perhaps you are already running 5 miles every day, but you would like to increase your running distance, or maybe you would like to push yourself harder to get rid of that stubborn fat around your things and your abs.

The right fitness trackers can help you run faster and push yourself harder. In fact, most of the latest models feature expert workouts and fitness tips. Even better, you are able to customize each goal so that they are attainable and realistic, which will also help you to stay motivated. You should set your goals according to daily steps taken, caloric intake, your calories burned, or just your overall activity levels. When you stop working as hard or you start slacking off, your fitness tracker is going to alert you that you need to step things up and will continue to send you notification until you get going again.

A Helping Hand

If you have taken off a few months or even years from your last run or a visit to your local gym, starting again is usually not easy. For the majority of individuals, it can take a few months to start getting comfortable with running again or going to the gym regularly. If you are unmotivated or feel like throwing in the towel in the first couple of weeks, your fitness tracker is useful to give you the support and motivation to keep going.

If your 9 to 5 job keeps you busy, lifting weight or going to the gym might mean you are not noticing your weight gains or losses. If you are unsure about your overall progress, a fitness tracker is a reliable tool that will provide you with the necessary stats and details to help you to carry on moving forward. It can also show you when you go wrong when you are failing to achieve the weight loss goals you are striving for.

For example, if you failed to lose weight over a given week, check on the stats that the fitness tracker stores where you can evaluate where you might have skipped out on a workout or where your activity levels dipped, or when you took in more calories than you actually burned. These are important stats that you will assist you in staying on track as well as motivation to keep on pushing harder.

The Perks Of A Fitness Tracker App

Depending on the fitness tracker brand, the apps that come with these devices allow for a way to closely track your goals and progress, along with the ability to connect with any other users. You may feel like on some days you need that extra push. When you plateau this is a clear signal to increase your activity levels or lower your overall caloric intake every day or a combination of both. You can also use these apps to connect with other users where you can get tips on what you may be doing wrong. You can also use the app to compete with or challenge other users. These are challenges which are highly motivating for many people.

Fitness Tracker Styles

Today there are so many different styles of the fitness and activity trackers available, which is mainly due to the increase in people that have chosen to get active, live healthier lifestyles, and to consume diets that are free from processed foods. The style of tracker that you choose needs to match up to your activity level, your lifestyle, and your goals for fitness or losing weight. It should also match up to the activities that you enjoy. For example, if you jog, run or walk, you should be looking for the models with GPS tracking features, which will assist you in mapping your routes out. Some models are preloaded with routes that are already in the area that you reside in.

Syncing Activity And Workout Level Data

Once you have decided how you plan to use a fitness tracker along with your preferred features, you will be ready to start. With the latest models, you won’t have to bother with having to deal with apps to track and monitor your progress since most automatically sync with your Smartphone through Bluetooth. If not, there is usually an option to plug into a PC manually using a USB cable in order to upload data daily or weekly.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose A Fitness Watch For Women?

1. Style and Design

First, let us start by knowing where you can where your fitness tracker. Below are the most common ways one can wear a tracker:

  • Wrist – this is the most common style of wearing the tracker
  • Clipping on shoelaces or clothes
  • Worn around the neck as the pendant
  • Under a headband

Which is the best place to where the fitness tracker? Well, the best place to wear the tracker is on the wrist; and there are 2 main reasons for this?

  • It can track your heart rate
  • You get many options when it comes to choosing a good tracker

Furthermore, a fitness activity tracker that is worn on the wrist offer added benefits of acting as a watch.

If you prefer keeping your wrist free for some reason, then you do have other options. However, it is important to remember that you will have to sacrifice some features. Some fitness activity trackers can be pocketed, clipped on the shoelaces, bra, or belt. They do still work very well, but they are a little bit inaccurate compared to those worn on a wrist.

In a nutshell, we recommend choosing the most traditional wrist-worn version. If this is not an option for you, then you should know that the other options do not offer heart rate monitoring option or sleep tracking. Some clip-on trackers can still be slipped into a watch strap and then worn on a wrist. Doing this will make it easy for the device to track your sleep.

2. The Screen

Another thing you have to consider is the screen. In other words, do you need a display or not. However, you have to remember that many trackers do have screens. A fitness activity tracker can either fall under one of three categories:

  • Screened Trackers – These are trackers that have a display, which you can use to see your fitness data and time
  • LED or Indicator trackers – This is fitness tracker with indicators mostly LED. The indicator shows your progress and notifies you on your goal
  • NO Display – These are Fitness activity trackers without any display or indicators. These types of trackers come with a smartphone app that shows your results.

The biggest advantage of investing in a screen version is the ability to display time as well as fitness data, without the need of using other devices. Its limitations are cost and decrease battery life. For this reason, you have to consider what you want.

LED indicators are best for those who do not need to look at the time. They are only designed to monitor one metric (often step count). With a glance, you will get an estimation of how far you are at reaching your goal.

3. Heart Rate Monitoring

The heart rate monitoring is a relatively new feature, but a great addition. In the past, athletes have been using real-time heart rate monitoring, but chest straps had to be used. It is important to note that chest straps are the most accurate way to get heart rate information. However, today, one has the ability to monitor their heart rate with wrist-worn trackers, and they have become popular.

Heart rate monitoring offers four primary benefits when it comes to a fitness plan. The benefits include:

  • Makes it easy to know if you are on your targeted heart rate zone
  • It makes calories burning data a bit accurate
  • It gives a person the power to track their heart rate while resting. Many people consider this as the main health indicator.
  • It makes sleeping tracking accurately. This is because the device relies on heart rate rather than depending on movements only.

These modern fitness activity trackers use a process known as photoplethysmography to measure the heart rate. The process uses green LED to project light into the blood vessels, in order to detect any changes in blood flow. This technique helps provide an acceptable result. The only limitation of a heart rate monitoring feature is that it consumes battery power. A majority of HRM enabled activity trackers will need charging at least once every few days; unlike simple designed activity trackers that can go for months without needing charging.

4. Water Resistance

If you are the person who spends much of your time in and around water, then you should consider investing in a waterproof device. Even though many of these devices are waterproof (they are waterproof to a certain degree), there are those that are fully waterproof and better than others on the market.

Before purchasing one, it is wise to look at either of the two ratings – The ATM or IP.

ATM (Atmosphere) Rating

ATM is an acronym for ‘atmosphere,’ and it is a rating that is used to indicate how well a device can handle water. An instrument-rated 1 ATM is said that it can handle water pressure depth of up to 33 feet (10 meters). Therefore, a tracker rated 5 ATM can handle water of 50 meters in depth. However, the sad truth is that a device rating test has been done under ideal conditions, and the numbers do not translate well in real life.

As a matter of fact, devices rated 3 ATM are not considered swimming friendly, but you can go to a shower with one. The best swimming rated device should have 5 ATM or more. It is important to always check manufacturers guidelines before jumping into the water.

IP Rating

IP rating and ATM rating are not the same. The IP rating measures a device’s potential protection level against solid objects. It is a rating that is widely used on consumer electronic devices, and the International Electrotechnical Commission developed it. The chances are that you have seen this rating on one of your electronic devices but not known what it is. The most common grades are IP58, IPX7, and IP67.

The first number represents protection against solid objects, and the second number indicates protection level against liquid. If by chance the solid protection level has not been included or measured, then it will automatically be replaced by an ‘X.’ For example, a device with an IP58 offers limited protection against solid objects, but excellent water immersion protection.

These devices are the best at counting the number of laps and even identify stroke technique; with these ratings, they can also be used during swimming sessions. However, if you are looking for underwater monitoring, then it would be wise to look for proper sports watches.

5. GPS

Many of us know that GPS stands for Global Position System, and the main use is to tell a device its current geographical position. For this reason, for those looking for accurate distance information, then they should look for a fitness tracker with this feature. Today, a majority of these devices come with inbuilt GPS sensor so that one can track the distance. If yours does not have a GPS sensor, then the device will estimate.

The good news is that you can also use your smartphone while using a compatible app. This will give you the power to not only map your workout but track your progress. Well, if you do not want the hustle of always using your smartphone’s GPS, you should then invest in a device that has GPS.

What are the benefits of having GPS in your fitness active trackers? Well, they offer:

  • Accurate Distance Tracking – GPS is the only way to get the correct distance
  • Speed and Pace – The good thing about GPS is that you can easily track your speed or pace, which can be used to analyze your workout
  • You do not need a Smartphone

6. The Cost/Price

A standard fitness watch that only tracks steps averagely costs between $75 to $100. The cost of a device will increase with the number of features available. In other words, a fitness activity tracker with walking, running, and GPS, and other outdoor activities will take you back about $100 to over $250. In a nutshell, an expensive watch is more accurate in terms of distance, speed, and data.

7. Daily Use

Do you want a fitness watch that you will use only for every day walk? Then the fitness tracker is the best for you. However, if you are looking for a watch for regular use in hiking, running, or cycling, then you should consider investing in one that has GPS. In other words, you should identify the reason you want to use the fitness tracker for and get one that is best for you.

8. Size and Weight

Basic fitness activity trackers do not weigh much, and of course, they are simple devices. However, watches that have more features and long-life batteries will weigh more and tend to be bigger.

9. Brand Ecosystem

Remember, every brand uses its app and software. Each is unique, and they generally do the same thing. Because of this, it is important to note that if in future you change one brand with another, it may be difficult or challenging to move your data to the new software. This is something that you should consider when buying a fitness watch.

Other Features

While considerably less important in the broad scheme of things, there are some other things to consider when choosing a tracker for you. Some of the additional features offered by select fitness trackers can be very beneficial to your precise exercise needs. Here are some of the most significant options out there:

Smartphone notifications

One nice feature available on some models is a notification that will inform you via vibration, tone or caller ID displayed on the screen when a call or message is being received. This is a nice touch because you can keep an eye on your communications without missing a beat and not have to worry about missing an important call.

Battery life

This will be different depending on the device you use. Some devices seem to go months on end without needing battery replacements and some will need to be connected to the power very day. Much has to do with the amount of features being offered and the use you will get from each one. You can’t expect a large screen tracking device with music, GPS and caller ID that only needs to be charged once a week.

Reminders to move

It is very easy to get comfortable and simply not move from one spot for hours on end while working, reading or studying. Sometimes we need something to rouse us from our seated positions and remind us that good stretching and walk about is in order. 5 minutes every hour is the recommended interval, but these can be set to your exact specifications as well.

Smartphone app

Some people just look at the trackers screen to see the information they need, but if you feel a Smartphone app is a good options make sure the interface is easy to understand and navigate.

Sleep Monitoring

Not too long ago, if you wanted to have your sleep habits recorded you would have to check in to a sleep clinic and get hooked up to a variety of machines. But today, you can use the ingenious smart app to track your sleep habits and determine your NREM and REM sleep cycles. This is done by observing your movement during your sleep cycle and calculating your sleep phase accordingly. The best quality sleep features three distinct cycles that allow the body and brain to fully reset and be prepared for the next day and the adventures that await.

Fitness Goals

Before you get excited and grab the first option you see, you will want to take some time to consider your experience level and personal goals. For example, you can’t expect to run a marathon by the end of the month if you are just beginning your running practice now. Your goals must be attainable if you are to stay motivated enough to achieve something like running a full marathon.

Instead, pick an option that will help you improve the level you are at right now. This could be setting a goal for the number of calories you hope to burn in one day or how many steps you hope to take. Trackers can be indispensable tools for achieving that eyes-on-the-prize focus and attention that makes healthier lifestyle choices easier to make. So make sure the tracker you choose has features suited to the fitness goals you have.

Music

Sometimes a bit of music can help you set the pace while focusing on your body. You can save you favorite playlist and leave your MP3 player at home.

Food Logging

This is somewhere in everyone’s top 5 favorite features in a fitness tracker. You will be able to sync your device with apps like MyFitnessPal and manually enter everything you eat. This allows you to fine tune caloric intakes and benefit from very specific readout of regarding the calories you are consuming vs those being burned daily.

Water Intake

Another good feature tough slightly less known is a water intake tracker. This is very important for beginner’s getting used to new exercise programs. Water intake is essential to a smooth transition from couch potato to seasoned athlete. If you have a tendency to forget to drink the recommended amounts of water each day, it is better to safely avoid the consequences with a friendly reminder than potentially suffer the effects of dehydration.

Those attempting to drop the excess pounds will need to focus on their water intake because good hydration is crucial to weight management. Furthermore, drinking plenty of water can keep you from feeling hungry at odd hours and can greatly extend your functionality by postponing the effects of fatigue.

Stress Tracking

Many models recommended here have a way to track heart rate, variable heart rate and breathing patterns to detect levels of stress. This is very important because stress can be highly counterproductive to all physical achievement. These stress trackers will detect when the body is beginning to feel stressed and will suggest a short meditation or break for mental rest.

In my opinion, these are one of the most important features to have on a fitness tracker. Because stress is such a killer and has reached epidemic level over the past few years. This can facilitate weight loss efforts and contribute to better health.

Female Health Tracker

The app tracks the monthly period, and gives you a heads up a few days before it arrives.
Some features often included are:

  • An ovation prediction window
  • Allows you to track symptoms for later reference
  • Displays a month to month overview of periods
  • Inactivity monitor/Sedentary Reminder

Most fitness trackers include this feature that provides a gentle reminder to get up and stretch legs and wiggle your body.

How to Get the Most From Your Fitness Tracker?

Most health enthusiasts who use the fitness tracker report having no problem at all when it comes to figuring out the basic functions of the fitness tracker. The problems, according to most users, come when they attempt to use the information provided and process feedback into their fitness plans.

So, what happens after the instructions on the insert have been followed to the letter and its up and running? Well, this is where knowing what to expect from your fitness tracker and how it will help you meet the challenges ahead is important to getting the most from your fitness tracker.

Tips for Getting the Most of Your Fitness Tracker:

Put the Work In

The first thing you will notice is that you won’t actually get fit just by wearing the tracker. It takes time, effort and commitment, but mostly it takes an intelligent plan –– and that’s where the tracker can help.

Figures As Guidelines

You will get many facts and figures from your tracker, but don’t take these as rock solid. When you see calorie consumption feedback take the information provided with a grain of salt because you will probably find discrepancies if you compared this information to an actual laboratory analysis

Don’t Clutter your Mind with Inconsequential Statistics

Only track the statistics you actually need to track according to the goals you need to reach. Then take a look at your overall results on a weekly basis.

Lifestyle Changes

Lifestyle changes can provide many benefits to improving health and increasing capacity for physical output. If your tracker has a daily activity tracker, use it to identify the times of greatest inactivity so you can begin making precise adjustments –– but not too many at a time.

Set Specific Goals

Goals are important to your overall goals but they need to be used as stepping stones to carry your efforts higher. Use your information to approximate what you can regularly expect from yourself week to week. Then use this information to make long, medium and short term goals for yourself. Measurable attainable goals are the keys to success.

Measure Your Goals

You can’t set broad goals open to vague interpretations and hope you will get impressive results in any specific time frame. For example, “lose weight” is a good healthy goal, but in the long run not specific enough. By making specific goals about the exercise you hope to use and the amount of exercise you need to achieve your goals of weight loss, you will greatly increase your chances of success.

Planning Your Meals

As mentioned earlier, many of these fitness trackers will come with a feature that can help you track your eating habits for maximum energy and efficacy in improving health. A meal plan will allow you to choose the most beneficial meals for your upcoming menu plan. Sometimes you will have to enter the meals in after you eat, like if you eat out. But if you can begin planning meals ahead of time you have more control over cravings and a better chance to say no to unhealthy snacks.

The Number of Steps Taken Shouldn’t Count as Your Exercise for the Day

If you have set a goal to get more exercise each day, you have made progress toward achieving your goals, but don’t cheat and include the total steps you take each day count as your exercise. Everyone should be taking 10,000 steps each day. Focus on accomplishing this as well as getting in anymore steps during your regular half hour of exercise that you do three or four times a week. Being more active and choosing to walk more instead of relying on a car is an important part of starting a healthier life, but it can’t take the place of regular exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Fitness Trackers Accurate?

It Depends.

The truth is that you will receive varying data when you use different fitness trackers. The reason being that different product manufacturers use numerous methods to record data, and a slightly different algorithm to analyze the data. This makes it difficult to gauge how accurate your device is.

This is not a big problem as one may think at first. You will see a difference when you use a single device; using the same technology to monitor your body every day. In other words, although you will receive different results if you decide to use two different devices, information displayed by the same fitness tracker will be reliable.

Aerobic exercises have a massive impact on the heart rate; according to scientific research. For this reason, you can effectively monitor your heart rate, and if after some time you improvements, it is a good sign that your level of aerobic exercise is working.

The primary fitness tracker criticism is that they are inaccurate at recording the number of calories burned. This should not be a surprising fact because it is difficult to pinpoint the exact amount of energy used by a living tissue at a dedicated laboratory. The only way to get a near accurate number is through an energy expenditure calculation. This calculation helps in calculating the energy used for movement. It is important to note that calories are burned when tissue is repairing and trying to recover while one is at rest. However, this is where energy calculations go wrong.

Nevertheless, the good news is that calories used by the tissue usually are under-calculated. In other words, what your fitness tracker is saying you have burned is not accurate, because, in reality, you have burned much more.

What Is the Difference Between a Fitness Tracker and Smartwatch?

One offers dedicated data, whereas the other offers generalized information.

The truth is that both the fitness tracker and smartwatches have borrowed some features from one another. This makes it a challenge to choose the one from the other, especially when they appear similar to one another. However, the fitness tracker offers dedicated information regarding your fitness. In other words, you will receive more details compared to what you will get from a smartwatch.

The smartwatch is the best option if you want to stay connected or simply looking for a fitness tracking that focuses significantly on smartphone feature. In a nutshell, fitness trackers, fitness information and related features come first whereas, with a smartwatch, functionality comes first.

Can Fitness Tracker Help with Weight Loss?

Yes, but you have to work on it.

By only taking the action of wearing a fitness tracker is not going to help with you losing weight. As a matter of fact, some people will not get an impact when they wear the tracker; it does not matter the model you buy. These devices only have the ability to monitor your activity level actively. Therefore, what you do with the information provided is up to you.

However, if you are serious with losing weight, this device can help you keep track of your progress. Furthermore, it will always keep you motivated and always encouraged to be active.

Why Fitness Tracker Should Be Worn All The Time?

It is a matter of goals.

The truth is that wearing a fitness tracker will help you achieve your goal in the long run. As such, it is wise to wear the tracker always, and not wearing one continually is one of the mistakes newly tracker owners do. Wearing the tracker is essential, especially if your target is losing weight. This simply means that you should wear your tracker even on those recovery days.

Infarct, wearing the tracker during off days, is paramount compared to wearing it during active days. This is because wearing fitness tracker only during work days; you will not learn anything important (activity and eating level issues). It is a proven fact that people tend to go overboard in terms of their diet during their off days. However, wearing the tracker will hold you accountable and show you exactly how many calories you are putting in your body.

Does Sleep Information Matter?

Yes, primarily if it is affecting your weight loss goals.

It is evident that a fitness tracker provides much information; which often makes people ignore the data presented. The good news is that if you find the information being too much, you can remove those that do not really matter to you like sleeping info.

However, sleep information is essential, mainly if it affects your weight loss goals. For example, if you do not sleep well or get enough sleep, they may cause you to consume more calories, but the following day, you will be exhausted. It is important to note that lack of sleep affects negatively calories burning through the day.

Therefore, for you to achieve your goals, you must find ways to improve the quality of your sleep. Under this condition, having sleep data is essential to achieving your goal. On the other hand, if you do not have sleep problems, then sleep information is not important to you, and you can easily delete the tracking feature and focus on those that are important to you.

How Do Fitness Watches Calculate Calories?

It is an algorithm based.

Using an algorithm that calculates the height, weight, age, and physical activity (may it be exercising, walking, running, intense excesses and others); a fitness watch will calculate the number of calories you are burning. Advanced fitness trackers include heart rate calculations.

NOTE: The number of calories is an estimation. The amount you see should be used as the guideline and not the actual or real number of burned calories.

Conclusion

With the help of a good fitness tracker for women, you will be on your way to achieving all the vital fitness goals like cycling time, running, personal lifting goals, and the steps taken a day. You should customize your device to track the kind of workout or activity you are doing, and it should be loaded with other features such as meal planning apps, waterproof design, and more.
