Best Marine Speakers

Not too many moments in life are as incredible as sailing with family and friends, enjoying the sun, the cruise, and the open water. When you add your favorite music to the equation it makes these days out ones that you will never forget.

When it comes to acoustics, boats are not perfect. They live in tough conditions and harsh environment that are not perfect for audio speakers. This is why the leading boat speakers have to cut through the sound of the engine, the water, the wind, and the open air. Marine speakers also must endure elements that are associated with the open sea, like rain, fog, dust, humidity, moisture, and more.

That said, you should invest in quality marine speakers only. You will thank us later. For optimal sound quality, it is important to replace your marine speakers with durable, high-fidelity speakers.

2. Polk Audio DB651 6.5″/6.75″ 2-Way Marine Certified db Series Car Speakers with Liquid Cooled Silk Tweeters

No products found.

When you listen to fine music through the Polk DB Series marine speakers is when it is the most enjoyable. Laser imaging is used by Polk engineers to determine the ideal blend of materials and speaker design for reducing distortion. This subsequent technology helps to make speakers that are able to play music at a high volume without any strain, smooth frequency response, and sharp detail.

This speaker is definitely first-rate. Polk Audio speakers are renowned for a very long tradition of providing superior products, and it is very obvious the minute you pick one of them up. They are available in different performance, shapes, and sizes and generate outstanding sound quality. So with any luck, then you will be able to find something that suits your needs and vehicle.

You will end up falling in love with the Polk highly rate marine speakers. They are admittedly of a much higher quality and more reliable compared with many of the other similar products that are available. Their sleek look is another thing you will love about Polk speakers. They come equipped with durable ABD grilles and a brushed aluminum appearance finish as well as stainless steel mounting hardware to add a very stylish touch to the interior of your boat to make it look just as good as the sound it makes.

Pros
  • Reasonably priced
  • Highly recommended for people wanting to upgrade average stereo speakers up to good ones
  • Most listeners will be very satisfied with the sound quality
Cons
  • Not of audiophile quality. The mid to high range may be harsh.
  • To sound good requires you to have to a good amplifier
  • The bass is good but it isn’t deep or strong. To bring its woomph out it still needs to have a subwoofer

3. BOSS Audio MR60W 200 Watt (Per Pair), 6.5 Inch, Full Range, 2 Way Weatherproof Marine Speakers – Editor’s Choice & Best Seller

Sale
BOSS Audio Systems MR60W 200 Watt Per Pair, 6.5 Inch, Full Range, 2 Way Weatherproof Marine Speakers Sold in...
  • Brand: Boss Audio Systems
  • 200 Watt max power 2-way marine loudspeaker
  • Mounting Depth 2-5/8 inch
  • System Sensitivity (1W/1M) 90 dB

When you are on a really tight budget, then you will be impressed by the Boss Audio MR60W marine speaker. Compared to high-end JBLs, this speaker costs less than one-fourth of the price. Many people are skeptical about splurging on boats these days. MR60W makes the decision a lot easier. That is because it offers style and quality. Going bigger than its marketed size of 6.5inches, it is a little less messy to install. Given all of the advantages that it offers, we have placed it on our list of best marine speakers.

Boss Audio uses a basic white grille with their MR60W marine speakers. Visible branding is combined with a plastic appearance. If you are just concerned with getting audio at a certain price, this one won’t bother you all. However, this will blend well with a white interior. They are comprised o a polypropylene cone woofer and treated cloth surround. In the middle, there is a Mylar tweeter which continues to be reliable over time and under frequency changes that are unnatural.

This marine speaker offers 100w RMS power handling capabilities. At a 4Ohm input impedance, it allows you to find a matching amplifier quite easily. Boss Audio states that it is water-resistant but it is not waterproof. Its grilles and surrounds have been coated specifically with rust protection and moisture. The salt that comes from seawater won’t affect the lifespan of the MR60W. They come in a pair. The only problem that we have faced was these speakers are not exactly 6.5 inches in diameter. So it is very hard to refit them.

When we saw how much the Boss Audio MR60W marine speakers cost, we really didn’t expect a lot from them. However, we were pleasantly surprised with very enjoyable audio. The audio has plenty of volume at 100w. Even when the engine is running at full throttle, it can still be heard over all the noise. Casual listeners will find that the highs, midrange, and bass are in line. They aren’t as clear as more expensive speakers such as the JBL MS6200. However, if you listen only for recreational purposes and not as someone who is a full-fledged audiophile, then you will have to agree that they are great value for the money.

Pros
  • Easy to pair them with an amplifier
  • Durable Mylar tweeter
  • Able to play at high volumes
  • Enjoyable audio
Cons
  • Bigger than 6.5-inches. Difficult to use them as a replacement.

4. Infinity Reference 612m 6.5-Inch 225-Watt High-Performance 2-Way Marine Loudspeaker – Editor’s Choice & Best Seller

No products found.

This is one of the top 6.5-inch speakers on our list.

The Infinity Reference is lightweight, sealed, and comes with a propylene cone stiff to make very applicable for marine environments.

The accuracy of these speakers is also great. If you are wanting to have a very moving audio experience, the Infinity has you covered.

It comes with the power-handling ability of 225-watts, which places it way over numerous other speaker models. Moisture contact with these speakers is something that I don’t worry about since the tinsel and spider lead is treated to protect against moisture contamination.

The speaker’s cone is sealed with the magnet structure offering added protection against moisture. Its cast polymer holds up against water damage, salt, and UV rays and is corrosion proof. It also features a stainless steel mounting.

It has first-class sound quality with its woofer surround material offering absorbing distortions and optimum cone-edge suspension that might pass the cone edge up to add a strong low-end.

Pros
  • Higher power handling
  • Durable
  • Moisture protected
  • Great design
  • Quality sound
  • Weatherproof
Cons
  • Expensive

5. MCM Custom Audio 60-10021 Marine Wakeboard Speaker Pair Black 6.5 Inch Two Way – Professional’s Choice

MCM Custom Audio 60-10021 Marine Wakeboard Speaker Pair Black 6.5 Inch Two Way
  • Poly cone woofer with rubber surround
  • 1" titanium dome tweeter
  • Binding post connections
  • Heavy duty ABS case and mount
  • Sold in pairs

Many of the speakers that we have covered here need to be integrated into the surface of the boat. There are a number of wakeboard speakers that should also be considered. These speakers have been designed so that they hang off of a wakeboard tower. One of those options is the MCM Custom Audio 60-10021 marine speaker. It is an affordable speaker, with a classic look that gets very vigorous and loud when an amplifier gives it even the slightest push. Given its affordable price, we were quite impressed and put it on our list of best marine speakers.

These MCM 60-10021 marine speakers are similar to coaxial speakers. Expect these run a lot deeper since their backsides are covered. On the top, there are mounting clamps that latch onto the wakeboard. It does need to be noted that the clamps are mainly plastic and have designed to bear the weight that hangs down on them. So any plans of clamping them sideways could go terribly wrong and end up ripping the speaker off as it is vibrating against the wind.

There is a maximum 100W RMS power handling capacity with this marine speaker. With a 40hm resistance, the speaker may be paired with the Pyle PLMRMP3B4 channel 800W marine amplifier to improve performance. The 60-10021, just like the amp, is waterproof. This means that saltwater spray won’t be getting into it quickly. The pipe diameter would be a minimum of 1.5 inches to mount it on the tower.

The MCM Custom Audio 60-10021 marine speakers are low priced. So we can’t use an audiophile eye to critique its audio. We get a lot more value than what you pay for. There is a decent level of details with this audio. Over the engine’s hum, you won’t likely be listening to each note anyway. The audio is only distorted past 90 percent of the top volume. For people who are afraid that more expensive wakeboard tower speakers may be stolen from their boats, this speaker is a great bargain. Its audio is definitely not better than the more expensive marine speakers on our list. But for the money you pay, you do get a very good deal.

Pros
  • Mounting clamps are included on the top
  • Decent audio
  • Affordable tower speakers
Cons
  • Audio quality is just agreeable

The MRWT40 features an extremely distinctive, elegant, and compact design which is easy to install onto the roll-bars on your water-vessel. These 4?-way speakers are classified as an all-terrain speaker ideal for marine activities and power sports with extra sturdiness and outstanding sound quality.

The polypropylene is a highly durable, flexible and resilient material which is used in many fields. It also takes on many forms such as wood, cotton, to metal. The cone made of polypropylene in the MRWT40 offers outstanding flexibility as well as improves the overall lifespan of this product. It also works with a silk tweeter which offers a vast spectrum of different sound modifications along with channel handlings.

A Butyl Rubber connects a plastic basket to the cone and this synthetic rubber can withstand the harshest weather elements and it is also impermeable when it comes to air.

Aluminum is one of the metals that is better known for its low density and abilities to resist corrosion. The voice coil made of aluminum makes sure that these speakers will not rust and that they can operate in the high tension environments. This also means it is nonmagnetic which means it won’t interfere with devices around the area of installation.

The Boss Audio MRWT40 is fully marinized which means it is completely sealed as well as coated to keep them safe from marine and humid environments. Even though this product is not completely waterproof, it is still well-coated which protects the speakers from UV rays.

Pros
  • The compact size makes it the ideal match for just about any boat
  • The wake-tower mounting offers an easy way to install the speaker
  • The UV coating protects the speaker from direct UV rays
  • It offers waterproof capabilities which is one of the requirements for marine speakers
  • Made from resilient and durable materials that extend the lifespan of this product
Cons
  • Strains slightly at the higher frequencies and can experience distortion if the volume is pushed to its limits
  • It might not be able to produce enough volume in order to counter the noise from the engine on open waters

7. Sony XSMP1621 6 1/2-Inch Marine Speaker

Sale
Sony XSMP1621 6 1/2-Inch coaxial 2-way Marine Speaker
  • 6-1/2" 2-way speaker
  • Water-resistant IPx5 certified design
  • UV and Salt Water Resistant
  • Removable grille
  • 70 Watts CEA2031 RMS Power

A marine speaker needs to sound awesome, yet they also need to have a long life span. This is one of the latest Sony models when it comes to the very best in marine speakers which have these auditory bases matched. This is due to the reactive polypropylene woofers and tweeters, and the durability is ensured with its UV-protected components and water-resistant design.

The audio quality is average, but the speaker efficiency is above-average, which is important due to the power handling that is below-average.

Sony is still classified as one out of the more popular brands across the globe. This company can be compared to Coca-Cola when it comes to their electronics, this name can be found everywhere. However, unlike their big-market products that include TVs and gaming consoles, the Sony XS series of marine speakers is one of the afterthoughts.

While the overall audio quality is probably better than the factory-installed boat speakers, the power handling and durability are just average in comparison to some of the better marine-audio systems. It doesn抰 really stand out as good or bad. It is just a reliable speaker that comes from a reputable name.

Pros
  • The 91 dB sensitivity-rating is regarded as above-average
  • High efficiency, excellent sound, and low-power consumption
  • High-quality, long-lasting materials, with polypropylene in the woofer-diaphragm and ferrite used for its woofer magnet. PEI is also used for its tweeter diaphragm
  • A solid midrange and high-range frequency score
Cons
  • It does not feature a crossover network that is sealed for its tweeter

8. Kenwood KFC-1653MRW 6.5″ 2-Way Marine Speakers

Kenwood KFC-1653MRW 6.5" 2-Way Marine Speakers Pair (White)
  • Frequency Response: 60Hz - 20,000Hz
  • Woofer: Water Resistant PP Cone
  • Tweeter: 1" Balanced Dome Tweeter
  • Mounting Depth: 2-7/16"
  • Impedance: 4 ohms

This series from Kenwood is a Marine 2-way speaker which comes with one pair of Two 6.5 inch recessed speakers. These reproduce high-quality and accurate audio with a loudness that is manageable to ensure your boating experiences are more memorable.

The KFC-1653MRW comes with a tweeter in an enclosed dome, and cone woofers that offer a precision that is clean across all the ranges, which include low, medium, and high. This results in a tight-bass response along with detailed midranges and crisp highs.

The outstanding performances associated with these speakers will not be affected by exposure to salt, water or the sun. This is due to a grille which is coated that offers exceptional protection from UV and other weather elements. It also comes with plastic composite-speaker baskets along with stainless steel, non-corrosive hardware.

Another striking element of the overall design of these marine speakers is the fact that it is strengthened using a plastic material that is durable with an appealing and smooth grille.

To add to the reinforcement of this product, the grilles have been pinned down using 6 screws across the speaker. The durable construction makes this speaker ideal for humid and moist environments and it is also resistant to corrosion and sunlight.

It measures around 13.4 X 2.8 X 5.5 inches and the mounting depth is of 2-7/16. This speaker is somewhat larger in size and for this reason, the overall mounting space needs to be deep and wide enough in order to accommodate the speaker.

Pros
  • Built from durable and reinforced plastic materials that match up to the d閏or of a boat
  • The grille is reinforced with 6 screws that offer an aesthetic appeal
  • The clean and tight bass response won’t interfere with midrange frequencies
  • Distortion is never experienced even at the maximum volume
  • The installation is relatively easy and it is also compatible with the majority of audio devices
Cons
  • The power handling is lower when compared to other models
  • The sound quality is not described as an audiophile quality

9. Kenwood KFC-1665S 6.5″ New 300W 2-Way Car Audio Coaxial Speakers Stereo – Best Value

Kenwood KFC-1665S 6.5" New 300W 2-Way Car Audio Coaxial Speakers Stereo
  • 6.5" Sport Series 2-Way Flush Mount Car Speakers (pair)
  • Power Handling: Peak: 300 watts RMS: 30 watts
  • 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer with treated cloth suround, with 1"...
  • Frequency Response: 35-22,000 Hz
  • 4 ohms impedance

If you already have a bit of experience when it comes to speakers in a car and you are venturing into buying your first marine speakers, the KFC-1665S Kenwood marine speakers are an outstanding choice as a first investment. These speakers are inexpensive and are a fantastic replacement to the factory speakers found in cars. They are also good for boat cabins. This product has accumulated positive reviews as audio that is relatively nice. Yet you should not be thinking about making the switch from the hi-end speaker to this product. Yet for their overall prodigious performance, we believe they should feature on this list for the best marine speakers.

The overall design of these marine speakers is in line with the standard coaxial approach. The 6.5-inch polypropylene cone woofer holds the 1-inch dome tweeter. The face on the outside is completely black while the exposed backside offers an easy connection from inside its cutout. Even though the design is pretty normal, it does look stylish if you mount the speaker against a black or grey background.

These marine speakers come in a pair and are the cheapest option on our list. It is physically limited, yet it makes up pretty well with its all-around, and ergonomic performance. It is very easy to install, which means it can quickly become your go-to speaker for a boat or a car.

Since the KFC-1665S is one of the budget marine speakers, we won’t go into detail about the audio response. When we first listened the highs and midrange was clear, with a subdued bass. With speakers in this price range and size, we did not expect much when it came to the bass anyway. However, when compared with stock-car speakers, they did reveal more clarity in the highs and mids. In addition, the bass does not produce boominess, and it brings about a somewhat refined performance overall. If you do not have experience with installing speakers on the water, we suggest starting with these.

Pros
  • Decent audio
  • Inexpensive
  • Clear highs and midrange
  • Easy-to-install
Cons
  • The bass is a bit lean

10. Pioneer TS-MR1640 6.5-Inch 2-Way Marine Speakers

  • Strenuously resists water, corrosion, and heat
  • 6-1/2-inch marine two-way speakers with 160 watts maximum power...
  • 30 Hz to 30 kHz frequency response; 91 dB sensitivity

These marine speakers were definitely designed with care when it comes to matching the latest marine and boating requirements.

Each of the speakers uses an elastomer-surround which is resistant to running or color fading, which helps to extend its longevity.

The Poly-Ether 1-1/8 “Imide Dome” Tweeter comes with magnetic fluids which offer smooth and rich highs while the injection-molded polypropylene cones are able to produce an exceptional mid-bass response, along with resisting effects from extreme heat, humidity, and salt water.

The AES cover that offers protection to the magnetic-circuit which means the performance of the speakers will always stay the same. The AES grills that are pure white are resistant to yellowing or fading caused by direct exposure to heat and sunlight. For an improved current transfer, these speakers come with gold-plated wire terminals and gold-tinsel wire.

What Is A Marine Speaker And What Are The Types?

The marine speaker is a type of audio speaker that can be used in physically wet and rough environments like off-road bikes or boats. They are more invested in a sturdier build and they can withstand physical shocks more easily. In addition to being moisture resistant, these speakers also resist salt water. The audio signature is associated with open and loud as they should be easy to hear over the crash of waves and rumbles of engines.

The three marine speaker types include:

1. The Coaxial Marine Speaker

These speakers feature different drivers which are mounted onto one axis. They typically include a cone-woofer. The midrange or tweeter driver is usually mounted in the middle of the cone. The coaxial speakers require less space, budget, and installation. Sounds from these cone woofers are usually obstructed by a tweeter to a certain extent. You will not experience the dynamic quality that you get from the component speakers.

2. The Component Speakers

These systems are formed with a midrange driver, tweeter, and the woofer that are separate and then position them to match up acoustics on your boat. These offer improved audio when compared to the coaxial speaker. They are, however, more complex to install and cost a lot more.

3. The Wakeboard Tower Speakers

These marine speakers are designed to mount a wakeboard tower on a boat or a rail or pole. They attach to clamps which are able to catch onto a pole or rail. Physically they have durability enhancements that are similar to the other types of marine speakers. Many of the other types of marine speakers will require that you have to cut out walls for the installation.

Benefits Of Marine Speakers

  • Even high-quality marine speakers are considered the most effective and inexpensive method to upgrade your boat, as well as improve your cruising experiences.
  • They are a lot more durable and superior than the built-in manufactured marine speakers.
  • These speakers are made to stand up well to environmental elements such as heat, wind, dust, UV, salt water and humidity. They also perform just as well as standard speakers when it comes to audio output and sound quality.
  • Marine speakers are available in various types and styles and you may be surprised at how they can change the overall appearance of your boat and setting, without taking up much space.

Marine Speakers Buyer’s Guide

Being aware of what the best speakers are on the market currently isn’t enough, you’ll also need to know which speakers will best fit with your specific budget and daily needs. You can always, of course, opt for the one you like the best and then attempt to add it to your boat. However, this may not be the best route to go with. You could end up with a headache as you attempt to fit them, be unable to fit them at all, or even damage them before you get them installed. They could even look cool but not serve the purpose you’d intended them for. This is why it’s incredibly important to think about these points and read this guide completely before you commit yourself to any one set of speakers.

Using Your Speakers

The first point which many people overlook, but which should be the most obvious, is what do you plan to use the speakers for? You’re buying marine speakers because you want them to fit into your boat. But, do you currently spend most of your time on your boat moving as fast as you can, relaxing, fishing, or towing wake boarders? The activities that you use will dramatically influence the volume level that you might need for the speakers that you’re considering. Participating in water sports will mean you need to supply loud music and your speakers should project their sound to the people skiing behind your boat. The louder you need the music to be, the higher wattage you may need to purchase. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your budget needs to be higher, but you’ll need to consider the quality of the speakers you select and how they’ll sound when they have a high volume pumping through them.

Budget

You have to choose your own budget. It can be tempting to go into a shop or log online and then order the best and most expensive speakers on the market. They might not be the best fit for your needs, though. It’s important to have a budget when you’re buying anything, this keeps you from overspending. Even if money isn’t an object, you should think about the worth of your speakers. This can usually be defined by your disposable income, as well as how often you actually use your boat. After you’ve set a budget, you’ll be able to take a look at the models of speakers that fall into this price range and fit with the activities you enjoy while using your boat.

Where Will They be Placed?

Next, you’ll need to decide where you’ll be placing the speakers on your boat.
You may be replacing original factory speakers that aren’t performing as well as they once were, or as well as you wish they were. You may have noticed that you have a dead sound spot in your speaker grouping, and that you need to add sound at either the front or rear of your boat. If this is the problem, you may need to look into other issues:

Where?

You’ll need to decide where you’re able to place the speakers on your boat, as well. Each one has a specific template as far as the depth it needs to be placed, and how deep the hole for it must be in order for it to fit correctly. You need to know about this before you can begin to shop for speakers, so that they fit correctly.

Which Ones?

The next thing to ponder is which type of speakers do you actually want?Do you want large ones with a lot of bass, or did you just need a few extra tweeters to fill in the sound? Being aware of the space that you have and what you want to put into it is important to choosing and fitting your new sound system’s speakers.

Direction

Most speakers send sound in only one direction – the one that they’re pointing in.

There are a few that can be readjusted after fitting, but most cannot be. This means that you’ll need to think about where you want the additional sound to travel to, your speakers will need to be pointed in this direction so that the sound covers the area correctly. You’ll also want to make sure that you have the balance that you’re looking for. If you want to hear the sound in stereo and really enjoy it, you’ll need to be able to hear it from all directions. It will need to come from your left and right sides, at minimum. This is why speakers are factory installed on both sides of a boat, it helps to balance the sound appropriately.

Magnetic Shielding

It’s vital that you also think about the magnetic items on your boat that need to function correctly. If you put a magnet too close to your compass, it will be negatively affected. Your readings will be distorted, and this could cause a real issue and lead to you getting lost. Speakers often have magnets on them that are quite large, which can affect your compass if they are not correctly shielded. This is often not a problem, as the speakers tend to be located fairly far away from a boat’s compass. If you are looking at mounting additional speakers on your center console or around it, however, you may need to ask the manufacturer about their magnetic shielding. If they don’t have the appropriate shielding, it’s important to keep them away from your boat’s compass.

Openings for Factory Speakers

The fastest way to upgrade your speakers is to choose new ones that simply replace the ones from the factory. This may not be as simple as it seems at first glance, however. There’s a chance that different speakers have the same diameter but different screw mountings or different depths. These issues can be managed, but it’s far easier to take out the old speaker first, measure it, and then choose new ones that will fit the space. This gives you the information you need for the install, including the dimensions and number of mounting spaces you’ll need. This will help you downsize your search to only speakers that will fit, so that you can just drop them into the spots that are available, connect them up, and mount them. You’ll won’t have anything to worry about, just enjoy the upgraded music quality.

Inspect Cage and Old Wiring

If you opt to remove the speakers that were factory installed, it’s important to check the wiring before you try to fit your new ones. There shouldn’t be any corrosion or damage to the wiring. If you find this, the wiring will need to be cleaned and it may even need to be replaced.Don’t skip this step, as it will impede the function of your new speakers. It may also shorten their lifespan. It’s crucial to carefully examine the mounting gear and the hole that was left behind from the old speaker.Check for water damage and where it may have come from. While marine speakers are water resistant, they will function far better if they are kept away from water, especially in the areas of electronic connections.

Think About an Amplifier

You may want to think about an amplifier to go with your new speakers, depending on the volume level that you’re trying to achieve. If a speaker is rated at 180 watts, this alone doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be able to achieve this level of sound from them. The sound is always restricted to your stereo’s output. If what you’re hearing isn’t loud enough, a marine rated amplifier can give you the extra sound that you’re needing. Adding an amplifier will help keep the sound clear as you boost it, instead of just turning it up, you could be pleasantly surprised at just how nice your music sounds.

Think About Your Volume

After you’ve considered improving your volume while also maintaining quality, it’s also vitally important to think about when you’ll be using both the stereo and speakers. If you’re at sea, or moored in an isolated area, this shouldn’t be an issue. If you’re in a marina, you should think about your neighbors. There could be people near you who don’t share your taste in music. It’s important to think about those around you, as well, when you choose your music. A great quality sound system can provide good sound quality at both low and high volumes, so you can enjoy your music no matter what you’re doing on your boat. Keep in mind that sounds over 85 decibels can cause permanent damage to your hearing, so regulating volume is extremely important.

Water Resistant

You should also look at the water rating that your speakers have. Water resistant and waterproof aren’t the same thing at all. Water resistant means that they can handle a little bit of rain or sea spray. Waterproof suggests that they can handle far more water. However, even waterproof rated speakers aren’t made to stay submerged underwater. It’s best to opt for waterproof speakers if you think they’ll get wet often, but you should also do your best to make sure they stay dry. Speakers can be washed to keep them looking nice, but they should be surface cleaned only.

Top Tips

The following are a couple of tips on marine speakers to help to take your listening experience to the next level without it having to cost you any more money.

Before you go out to buy marine speakers, note the speaker you will be putting them in, and the direction as well. When you have an idea about the space it will allow you to buy one that fits your area correctly, and not be congested and snug. You need to allow it enough room in order for it to do its job. Placing the speakers properly will let you control where you want less or more audio reach. When placed on the deck, usually it is preferred to face the window since that produces the best output.

I have heard and see far too many individuals power washing the marine speakers and they end up battering their poor speakers in their attempt to “clean” them. Keep in mind, just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you necessarily should! Although marine speakers are durable and rough speakers that are weatherproof and waterproof doesn’t mean they can be drowned underwater and just expect it to be fine afterward. In order to clean your speaker, use a damp cloth and light hand, and nothing else.

In order to maximize the performance of your marine speakers, hook an amplifier in and watch how your boat rocks! However, you need to be careful that you don’t exceed an 85-decibel volume for extended periods of time. When that limit is crossed, it can potentially damage your hearing.

Are Marine Speakers Really Waterproof?

Yes, and most of them that we have looked at are rated fairly highly. However, some of them are more water resistant. So if you have enough money, there are numerous models that are available in the marketplace that are waterproofed very well so that they can withstand full submersion in water and still survive. In order to be considered to be a maritime model, many important factors need to be ticked off the list in order to be considered suitable.

All of the circuitry mounting, as well as other metals, needs to be made out of rust resistant materials, and that is usually stainless steel since it is fairly inexpensive material.

When discussing waterproofing, usually we IP rate the item’s enclosure, which designates a number that relates to how waterproof and dust-tight the product’s housing is. If it is suitably airtight and dust tight then it is deemed to be protected from water as well as other particles from getting into the inside and damage the internal parts.

These numbers go from 1 to 7, with 1 not being any special protection, and then up to 7 which is an indication that the item is sufficiently protected against damaging effects that can be caused by extended immersion.

Marine Speakers FAQs

Q: How many marine speakers do I really need?

You need two speakers at a minimum. The common type of installation is two dash-mounted speakers, usually close to the audio hardware, tuner, or receive on the dashboard of your boat. If you have a bigger vehicle, then you will want to consider having more than one pair of speakers installed.

Q: What are the different kinds of marine speakers that are available?

A: Recessed speakers are in the shape of a cone and may be fitted into your boat’s walls, panels, or dash. You can mount tower marine speaker to the bars of the boat tower.

They tend to be more powerful and may be used, for example, to blast music out of your boat to a rider that is being towed behind you. Depending on what individual model you are using, for extra power, some speakers will need an amplifier.

Q: What is so special about marine speakers?

A: Corrosion-resistant casings and hardware are featured on marine speakers made out of rubber and polypropylene in order to withstand weather elements and salt water. They have enough power so that you can hear them over the noise from the engine or water.

There are also some models that are magnetically shielded so that they don’t interfere with a compass or other onboard hardware.

Q: What audio cable should be used for marine speakers?

A: It is recommended by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) that stranded copper wire should be used for marine wiring. Other types of metals corroded too fast and are not fit to be able to withstand a boat’s vibrations.

A solder or tin coating on tinner wire protect the copper wire further from corrosion. You also need to ensure that the wire gauge is sufficient and has enough strands.

Marine cables that the American Wire Gauge (AWG) has sized comes with a “boat cable” label that is attached to the insulation. There are enough strands on Type 2 cables for general wiring and speakers, where type 3 cables call for installations with lots of jostling, flexing, or cable bending.

Q: Do I need to have a receiver?

A: The audio signal is sent from the receiver from the source (smartphone, CD, radio, etc) to the speakers. Depending on the speakers and receiver, the signal can be sent directly to your speakers, or they may need to first pass through an amplifier.

Most marine speakers can be power directly from a receiver. However, tower speakers and other more powerful models might need amplification.

Q: Why can’t I use car speakers instead?

A: Boat speakers are built specifically for a marine environment. Just think about car speakers being exposed to water, wind, salt, and sun – they wouldn’t last too long under those conditions.

Marine speakers have been designed to perform on water; they feature rubber surroundings, are sealed and have corrosion-resistant parts and UV-resistant plastic casings.

Conclusion

Selecting the best marine speakers to meet your needs doesn’t have to be a difficult chore. You just need to follow the suggestions in this guide to ensure that you have taken all of the important elements into consideration before looking for the speakers that will suit your needs the best.

That will help to ensure that you buy a speaker that does what you want it to do; that is within a price range that suits your budget. If you don’t do this, you might end up buying one just because it looks good but doesn’t perform the way you had hoped it would.

All of the speakers that are listed in our guide provide quality sound, depending on the money you are prepared to spend; so select your speakers wisely and you will be able to enjoy your music for many years into the future.
