Best Running Shoes for High Arches

Many runners are faced with the problem of having high arches. Although it is easy to manage, if you don’t properly address the issue it can turn into a problem rather quickly. The high arches (or cavus foot, specifically) problem occurs whenever an excessive amount of weight gets placed on the foot’s arch and ball. That can cause a number of negative effects that may make it very uncomfortable to run. In addition to the strain and pain, the condition might also cause ligament rupture, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and shin splints. If you are someone who has high arches, then your feet don’t have the necessary flexibility to absorb the impact that occurs when you walk or run. That is why it is so important that you make sure you wear the right shoes.

Is having aching ankles something that you are tired of suffering from? Unfortunately, you have been through so much stress. I understand all of the stress that is involved. However, it is now time to bring this to an end by getting a good running shoe to wear for high arched feet. This Asics shoe might be perfect for you.

It is an outstanding brand that offers an excellent cushion design that will keep your feet comfortable and help to ensure you are provided with the maximum amount of shock absorption during the entire course of your running session. The shoe’s comfort will provide you with such a great feeling that you might think you are running on top of a cushion.

A great running shoe for runners with high arches always should offer enough support so that your ankles are always supported and remain free of any unexpected fractures and twists. The supportiveness offered by these shoes will also ensure that your body weight is evenly distributed across your two feet and there will be no or little extra stressed placed on the balls of your feet and ankles.

These shoes are very well ventilated and allow air to circulate freely inside of the shoe. That helps to ensure that your feet don’t sweat excessively and cause any inconveniences while you are running. Your feet are kept cool and dry throughout the entire day.

The sole is flexible, firm, and light. That makes this shoe ideal for runners who have high arched feet. Its sole is durable and non-slip. I would say that in general Asics are good to wear for trail running.

Pros

These running shoes are ideal for short and mid-distance running on all different kinds of terrain. This model has both women and men’s options available. However, there are a few differences in the women’s shoe. The outsole is comprised of the Contagrip LT, that features a light soft material to enhance traction. The Contagrip HA is located in the outsole’s ball of the foot and heel areas and provides impact resistance and support. For years, the Ghost has been for Brooks one of its best selling shoes. It has made for itself a reputation for being able to perform reliably on any pavement, immaterial of whether you have just started running or are still looking for a partner for the marathon. Prior models always had a good fit, and Version 11 keeps up with this, and in addition, has an upper that feels great because of it being seamless and constructed from a mesh.

Traditionally, these shoes have a drop of 11mm, and this makes your feet to get a slight forward angle. It is ideal for people who are heel strikers, or runners that have good form, naturally. The toe box of the Ghosts is wide, but in the midfoot, they cinch up so that your foot is held in place. The most endearing part of this shoe is that they have a careful balance between the weight and cushioning, thus giving a perfect balance.

Arches are always looking for the extra cushion that this shoe provides. The arches are supported by Gel foam padding that conforms to your feet and helps to spread the energy of impact across the sole.

What is A High Arched Foot?

Let us first get to know exactly what issue we are talking of here. It is a high arched foot. Any idea what we are talking about? That is the idea of this discourse to give you the information you need. People can have high arched feet. A foot is considered high arched when the flexion of its arch is fixed and excessive. When a person has a normal foot arch, the distribution of weight on the feet is even. When a person has high arched feet, they will be carrying all their weight on the balls and heels of the feet. This leads to a condition that is very stressful for the toes and ankles and as a result, the runner lacks stability and suffers pain.

The flexibility of the feet is of great importance for runners, as it is of great help in absorbing the shock that the feet get after every stride. People with high arched feet have a fixed flexion. The result of this, in most cases, is to cause supination of the feet, which is making the feet roll outward after every stride, and this, in turn, can lead to unexpected fractures of the ankles. You can develop high arches at any stage of your life, and this can affect one or both feet.

What Causes High Arched Feet?

There is a general belief that high arched feet are the result of a particular health problem, which is not really true. High arched feet are a structural deformity that is often inherited.

High arches (Pes Cavus) can also be a result of neurological issues of which CMT or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is one. This disease causes the neuromuscular contracts to make the balls and heels of the feet to come closer together. Almost half of the people with high arched feet have suffered from CMT. Pes Cavus can also be a result of clubfoot, post-stroke paralysis, spina bifida, poliomyelitis and others.

How to Know If You Have High Arch Foot?

Identify your feet type before you get into any shoes. To determine this you need to place your feet in paint or water. Then place a plain sheet of white paper on a surface that is plain. Place your feet on the paper to get a footprint that can tell you whether you have high arches or not. If the footprint shows the heel and front of the foot in contact with the ground, then your foot has a high arch.

Why Do I Need A High Arch Support Running Shoe?

The most common question asked by runners is simply why do they need a high arch running shoe. Well, the answer is quite simple; it goes the same like it does for those who are flat feet runners and due to your arched foot, you are not able to properly absorb the shock that comes with it. Within the industry, it is well known that high arched runners aren’t able to absorb shock naturally, hence the reason why they require a supported midfoot. And, these come with a simple bump in the midfoot area or a custom designed midsole that acts as a support band.

What Are The Common Injuries Associated With High Arches?

Besides the obvious severe pain, other injuries also arise due to having high arches. And, the following are widely known within this particular field as a result of high arches:

  • Excruciating massive pain
  • Hammertoes
  • Fractures
  • Plantas fasciitis
  • Arthritis
  • Calluses
  • Several ankle sprains and severe pain

Can Running Shoes for High Arches Prevent Overpronation or Supination?

The majority of runners who have high arches are forced to deal with supination. This just simply means that when you run, your feet tend to outwardly roll. However, not all face this but the majority of high arched runners do and it is now quite common. Don’t get too distressed because high arched running shoes do in fact prevent supination.

And along with this, they go on to supply a royal feeling of comfort when it comes to providing support. Support is a huge deal when it comes to these types of shoes and it is one of their main features. Additionally, runners think that due to their high arches, they can’t suffer from overpronation. Overpronation is simply your feet rolling too much inwards as you land.

So, if you’re unsure if you do are prone to overpronation, simply look at the outer soles of your footwear. If there is any indication that your insides are worn much more than your outsides, there is more than likely a high chance that you do indeed face overpronation. Additionally, these issues can readily be corrected with the use of shoes that properly support high arched runners. And they do indeed go on to reduce the overall pressure faced by your feet; in essence, they do an excellent job at providing cushion as well as distributing your weight in an even manner.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Running Shoes For High Arches?

Arch Support

When it comes to supporting those arches, you should always try to find a pair of shoes that readily provide arch support. However, those with lower arch support will not provide the support that you need for your high arches. And, when your arch isn’t properly supported, they not only cause discomfort, but they also result in extreme injuries that can easily be prevented.

Cushion

In your selection process, you should select a shoe that does indeed provide enough comfort. And when we say comfort, we mean sufficient cushion that actively support the activities that you participate in as well as those which can be worn for extended periods of time as you go the extra mile. However, don’t go for something that gives you a squishy feeling. So, find a shoe that supports your combined needs.

Shock Absorption

Shock is only absorbed with the proper cushioning type. And the same goes for the height of your arch. When it comes to dealing with high impact activity like that of running, a spacious toe box is extremely important. This is simply due to the fact that toes need sufficient space as they spread when the ball of your foot reacts with the ground.

Stability

As your shoe comes in contact with the ground, you should get a sense of security and stability. Your shoe should not only encourage but also fully support your natural gait. And there should not be any feeling of unevenness due to impact. However, when you are faced with the lack of proper stability, this can cause more harm than good and you’ll more than likely suffer from twisted ankles.

Material

Those who perform high impact fitness as well as running tend to prefer a shoe that is more breathable than one that isn’t. Certain fabric as well as mesh support this. And of course, others such as leather trap a great deal of moisture and become uncomfortable after a while.

Foot Size

When it comes to selecting a shoe, those designed for athletics tend to be a bit smaller. So, it may be wise to get a size that is larger than what you typically wear. And, if you have wider feet, don’t forget that most offer this option to better suit your needs. This can also be considered when it comes to those who have average feet size and prefer to wear thicker socks.

Style

If you’re all about style with the addition of comfort, we have some pretty good news for you. Running shoes have been designed to accommodate both with rich vibrant colors or a simple style that suits you. Shoes tend to be either feminine or even quite bulky. And they are all designed for your safety, so when it comes to choosing a style, take something that suits your needs.

Comfort

Depending on your use, comfort should be your number one concern. And, we provide several detailed reviews that fully explain all the pros and cons. However, it’s only your feet that can decide what’s best for you.

Traction

Depending on the terrain in which you run, this creates the difference on the overall performance of your shoes. When your shoe is fitted with the proper tread, you’ll be provided with all the traction that you’ll ever need. And you’ll be protected from several small yet not so small mishaps.

Flexibility

When we speak of flexibility, we’re basically questioning the overall quality of the shoe. And, your shoe should be able to readily bend and flex to the natural running motion that your feet produce. In most cases when shoes are extremely flexible, they do not provide the proper support. So, be sure to find the perfect balance in your shoe that has been designed especially for those with high arches.

Durability

Most shoes have durability issues. However, when your shoe flexes too much, there’s a high chance that it isn’t going to last for too long.

Weight

When you run, you’re going to be carrying the weight of everything on you. So, your shoes should be light enough to prevent feelings of baggage as you move.

Final Words

If you have high arches, don’t look at it as too much of a problem. There are more than likely endless options to facilitate your desired style of footwear. And there are great shoes that support your passion for running in spite of those high arches, and they readily provide comfort and support for not only your heels but your forefoot as well.

So, have no fear because your high arches are sure to get the comfort and support that they need. And, they will also feel much more free with specially designed shoes that properly support your weight. In essence, you can train and run without the worry of pain and injury. So, with these shoes, you’ll be able to enjoy your run without being stressed about all the what if’s!
