Best Running Shoes for Supination

Supination which also goes by the name of Underpronation occurs when your feet turn outwards as you walk. This deposits your entire bodyweight on the outer parts of the feet, rather than the arch, which usually occurs during overpronation. Some of the contributing factors associated with this condition will include ball or heel alignment problems, rigid joints, and inflexibility and strength imbalances with the ankles.

If you happen to be a runner with supination, there is a solution to your problem. These include specialized running shoes designed for Underpronation which assist with avoiding injuries. These running shoes are exceptionally versatile and come with superior cushioning, that allows the feet to be more natural and roll in rather than out as you are walking or running.

These running shoes have been designed specifically to provide the runners that supinate with better fitting shoes along with everyday comfort. The Gel-Venture 5 running shoe also features a hard rubber and rugged outsole which makes it suitable for different terrains that you may run over during training. These shoes are recommended for pavement, chip trails, and off-road running.

Specifically made for under and neutral pronators, these shoes are available in 1/ 2 sizes from 5 to 12. This means you should be able to find just the right size that fits your foot perfectly. The width also accommodates various sizes which will depend on the dimensions of your foot. The gel-cushioning system will help to soothe your feet, similar to any other pair of ordinary sneakers.

The gel-cushioning system in the rearfoot comes with an AHAR abrasion-resistant compound which is strategically located in these shoes. This assists this footwear in being a lot more shock-absorbent, particularly on the outer parts of these outsoles which usually experienced the most weight. The synthetic-mesh fabric has been overlaid together in order to create the upper of the shoe which maximizes the breathability of these shoes. This upper mesh is also resistant to water and comes in a variety of colors for female and male athletes. These shoes lace-up, which offers a more natural fit along with the sturdy reinforced toe-box.

Pros
  • Great stability
  • Offers superior traction on the tighter turns
  • The foot-gel cushioning in the rear provides exceptional comfort
  • You can detach the sock liner
  • Responsive and lightweight midsole

The midsole and upper on these running shoes is a redesign from the previous version the Venture 5. This newer model now delivers outstanding shock absorption and comfort properties while you run over different trails.

The outsole is made of rubber and is very rugged which has been engineered into one piece which provides improved structural integrity. Under the sole, the multi-directional lugs offer excellent traction that you are able to rely on when running over trails with loose rocks or on a rainy day. An additional feature for off-road runners would be the durable toe-bumper which is stitched into the front part of the shoe. This bumper serves the purpose of protecting the toes from any frontal impacts.

As comes standard with the ASICS running shoes, the Venture 6 comes with a high-quality GEL cushioning system. This feature attenuates shocks that are produced from impacts while running on the road. The result is that your feet transition more smoothly to your midstance. If you have your own medical orthotics, you are able to take out the original sock liner so you can use your own inserts for a reduction in pain. These shoes also come with high-abrasion rubber outsoles which are designed in a way that only the high-wear portions of these outsoles will make contact with the surface that you are running on. This is a design that reinforces these susceptible parts which result in outstanding shoe durability. While these are generally comfortable running shoes, they provide arch support that is minimal. The bottom part of the shoe is also very rigid and may aggravate or worsen foot pain that already exists.

Pros
  • Strong build and ideal for trail runs
  • Great fit
  • Remains comfortable even after long runs
  • Added reinforcement for extra durability
  • The heel collar is superior
  • Priced reasonably
  • Great aesthetics
  • Good traction
  • The stated sizes are accurate
  • The flexibility is moderate
  • Protective bumper to protect the toes
  • The sock liner is removable
Cons
  • The fit is narrow
  • Skids on wet surfaces
  • A bit rigid for some users
  • The responsiveness is inadequate

  • Lightweight protection  : just enough to provide protection for...

The Speedcross 4 Trail Running Shoe is an exceptionally cushioned type of running shoe. These shoes are also lightweight yet grips adequately on soft trails for a tumble-free training session. A stand put feature about these running shoe is the Quicklace which reduces the effort required in order to tighten the shoes up. The one-pull lacing system is able to lace the shoes strongly and also adds to an easier way to put them on or take them off.

Another stand out feature is the Sensifittechnology which works on cradling the foot, from the midsole to lace-up. This ensures a custom-made fit that is snug and secure which helps to reduce the dragging feeling on longer runs. The Contragrip Technology has managed to combine the material composition, density and the geometry which optimizes the grip that is generated on all surfaces.

The uppers feature an anti-debris mesh which keeps debris and dirt out. This makes your shoes a lot easier to keep clean when you return from wet and dirt trails. The outer parts feature a water-resistant textile that lowers the chances of your feet becoming waterlogged should you step into muddy puddles.

The sock liner features an ethylene molded vinyl-acetate foam. The foam molds to the natural shape of the foot and help to distribute your weight more evenly instead of all your weight impacting on the outside parts your feet. The design overall is durable enough in order to deal with 2 or more runs every week. Even though these shoes are advertised as water resistant, your feet can still become wet as they are not waterproof.

In addition to the superior traction, they are also extremely stable in just about every situation. The added breathable liner in these shoes provides extra air and freshness to ensure your feet remain stable and comfortable during all types of movements while you are running.

These running shoes are not just trendy and stylish, but also offer exceptional benefits for your feet. The EVA midsole offers flexibility and support which allows every step to happen more naturally.

Combine this feature with the excellent impact-absorbing outsole and you have protection from the beginning to the end of each run. These shoes also assist with weight distribution and this is vital for those who supinate.

The EVA full-length sock liner is made to contour to each foot. With this assistance, the pressure points are lowered and it provides overall heel to toe comfort.

The price of these shoes is really attractive and makes them one of the best choices for those on a tight budget.

Pros
  • Shock absorbing
  • Trendy and stylish
  • The EVA midsoles offer added comfort
  • EVA full-length sock liners
  • Distributes weight
Cons
  • The soles wear out quickly
  • The toe boxes appear to be small

6. Saucony Cohesion 10 Running Shoe

Sale
Saucony Women's Cohesion 10 Running Shoe, Navy Blue, 7 Medium US
  • Injection molded EVA midsole provides a cushioned underfoot ride
  • Heel GRID System offers stable cushioning
  • Open air mesh for breathability

These running shoes combine both functionality and affordability. The Cohesion 10 handles well when it comes to light and heavy mileage runners, even though the features are not the best when it comes to the overall design. These neutral running shoes, help to rectify supination by aligning the feet in the way that they should be.

The cushion may be moderate, yet these shoes remain comfortable for the supinators. This is due to the injection-molded midsole which features ethylene-vinyl-acetate and a rubber outsole. This outsole also provides good traction on slippery terrains, while the midsole makes these shoes comfortable, supportive, and responsive.

The new mesh-uppers are a replacement for the less comfortable type found in the previous models. This updated version assists with increasing airflow inside the shoe. The overlays are fewer which adds to the stability of the shoe and supportiveness to your feet. We also feel that excess padding may be the ideal solution for the heavier runners that are impacted more when they land. The padded tongue, foam midsole, along with the rubber outsoles offer the bounce that is needed in the area where the small toes are positioned, which is where the majority of pressure is usually exerted. When it comes to style, this type of shoe easily matched up to Crossfit workouts, or for running and walking.

Pros
  • Versatile trainers
  • Affordable
  • Ideal as an entry-level running shoe
  • Uses fewer overlays
  • The outsoles provide great traction
  • Spacious toe box
  • Very breathable
  • The ideal fit for those with both wide and narrow forefoot
  • Can provide relief for people that suffer from Achilles heel issues
Cons
  • Not enough support
  • Too Light
  • Performance is poor in wet conditions

This is a brand that is focused on making comfort a top priority for its wearers and more particularly for people who supinate. These designs come with footbeds that are well-padded that fits well for various widths and shoe sizes. We also believe the durability of these shoes makes it a great choice to ease any supination issues.

The breathable upper-mesh contributes to adding more comfort to these shoes while keeping your feet dry and well-aerated even after those long runs. When it comes to durability, the overlays feature a synthetic lightweight material, while the outsoles are made from a soft-blown rubber. This rubber provides the grip and cushioning that you need from a running shoe.

Along with the soft-fabric lining, these shoes also feature removable foam insoles. The foam is eco-friendly and makes these shoes more responsive, dynamic and well-padded. The segmented crash-pad helps to correct awkward landings which are linked to supination. This pad stretches through the entire length of these shoes and accommodates supination and neutral landings.

On the forefoot’s base is the Omega Flex Grooves which allow for an increase in fluidity while running or walking. This feature provides each foot with a desirable natural movement which is often lacking in the standard running shoes. With the universal platform, fit and functionality are enhanced along with the different available sizes. Even though these shoes fit really well in most cases, the toe guards might feel a bit tight for some.

Whenever you notice the term “GEL” used for ASICS shoes you are guaranteed that they contain superior cushioning. This running shoe is definitely no different. This GEL technology is made to absorb impact and severe shocks. This also ensures that each time your feet touch the ground, these forces are spread more evenly. This will mean less pressure spots while you run.

This type of shoe is the ideal choice for those people who underpronate. And even better for people that experience pain along the outside part of the feet. The design helps to compensate for uneven footstrike. These running shoes will help your feet and knees feel better after a workout or a run, especially if you supinate and you have higher arches. The ASICS brand also uses GUIDANCE LINE Midsole Technolgy that come with vertical flex-grooves which assist with a more guided stride. This means if your feet naturally roll outwards, these shoes will assist with centering them. People who use these shoes brag about how they have helped to relieve pain in their feet and lower legs.

Pros
  • Outstanding responsiveness and cushion for a springy, durable, and comfortable ride
  • The forefoot and rearfoot GEL offers additional cushioning regardless of if you land midfoot or heel strike.
  • The superior quality translates into a longer lifespan. Some runners can get up to 500 miles in one pair.
  • Various color options to choose from.
  • Made for underpronation and one of the preferred choices for people with higher arches.

  • The common sizes often sell out quickly
  • Not made for people with flat feet

What Is Supination?

Supination, basically put occurs when a person’s foot rolls outwards as they are running. Underpronation is the other name for this condition. In other words, it is the reverse of overpronation. If you overpronate, it means your foot is turning inwards as you run.

Supination is not really an issue for people that are not runners. Yet if you are constantly running on your foot’s outer edge this can cause issues for your legs. With extended periods of wear-and-tear when you run this is bound to result in an injury. Shin splints, runners knee, along with plantar fasciitis is just the beginning.

To start off with you need to gain an understanding that supination is not some sort of curse or plague. It is actually something that can be corrected and supported. Luckily most injuries and pain is something you can prevent and can even be reversed when you wear the correct running shoes. Yet the most important factor is that you choose the correct running shoe that matches your foot.

Investing in running shoes to match your underpronation could be the very best decision that you ever make for your feet.

Long Term Effects Associated With Overpronation And Supination

Oversupination and overpronation can result in musculoskeletal painful conditions along with dysfunctions. Some of these include:

  • Plantar Fascitis
  • Arch and foot pain
  • Painful and tight calves
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Sprained or rolled ankles
  • Knee pain and specific types of knee problems
  • Shin Splints
  • Tight hamstrings and hip flexors
  • Herniated discs
  • Chronic or acute pain in the lower back
  • Sore and tight buttocks and hips

Signs Of Supination

If you are not sure whether you supinate, here are a few of the more common symptoms where you will underpronate through a gait cycle. It is important to note that even when you supinate, it does not mean that you will experience all of these symptoms. The list below is the red flags that are shouting “Hey it’s me, Your Body, you are definitely doing something wrong”. These are as follows:

  • Ankle pain
  • Achilles pain that is constant
  • Ankle sprains that are frequent
  • Shin splints or shin pain
  • Stabbing pain experienced in the heel or the bottom of your feet (Plantar Fascitis)
  • Foot, heel, or ankle swelling
  • Blisters or calluses on the feet
  • Throbbing feet and lower legs
  • You shoes start to wear prematurely along the outer edge
  • IT Band Syndrome (outer knee pain that is constant)

The most important sign that you are probably supinate is when you already have very high arches.

Supination Causes

There happen to be several issues of supination:

  • Genetics, which include ankle stability, your arch curvature, and how long your legs are.
  • Wearing worn-out or unsupportive shoes.
  • Walking constantly along flat surfaces
  • Poor posture
  • Standing for long periods or overexercising
  • An old injury that has resulted in instability. This could include tendon tears, ankle sprains, or a stress fracture in one of your legs.
  • Range-of-motion that is limited or stiffness caused by aging
  • A lifestyle that is sedentary
  • Your legs are different lengths
  • Cartilage loss or loose ligaments in your ankles, feet or joints.

The Advantages of Selecting the Correct Running Shoe

When you choose the correct shoes it can help to avoid a lot of hardships while you run. If the choice in a shoe that is wrong would lead to destruction, then the choice in the right shoe could be regarded as your savior. Here are some of the benefits linked to choosing a shoe for running that supports supination.

  • Your shoes will wear down more evenly, which helps to prevent premature wear. This will mean you will get far more miles from these shoes, which translate to savings for you.
  • The right shoes help to prevent ankle fractures and sprains as the pressure is no longer uneven on your outer feet.
  • Your calves and Achilles will start to loosen up. Your lower legs will also be more flexible which means fewer injuries and the more you are able to run.
  • The pain in the ligament under each foot (plantar fascia) will disappear. Supination places strain on the ligament which connects the toes and the heels together. With the right shoes, you will be able to run faster and further without this painful condition.
  • Lower the likelihood of experiencing shin splints. If you have naturally high arches, the shock absorption is less. This can result in shin splints. With the right shoes that can support the arch of each foot, this will provide you with better shock absorption.

How to Diagnose Supination of the Foot

Here are a few methods that can assist with indicating if you have excessive supination:

Study Your Old Shoes

People that have a gait that is neutral, which means the foot does not represent excessive pronation or supination, the sole of these shoes wear down from the heel’s outer edge towards the middle.

Supination causes signs that are more obvious by only wearing down the outer edges.

Check Your Footprint

Wetting your feet and then making a print on a surface that is flat can help to detect any gait problems. To conduct this simple test:

Wet your feet thoroughly.

Now step onto a flat surface firmly which will easily show up the footprint. The recommended surfaces include a paper brown bag or concrete tiles. Now step away and look at your footprint.

If you can see at least half of your arch then this is a sign of a gait that is normal. If you are only able to see a small section of the arch or there is no visible arch, this is a sign of supination.

Analyzing Your Gait

Physical therapists or podiatrists usually perform gait analysis which is when you will run or walk along a special type of platform.

Individuals that are experiencing the above-mentioned complications or symptoms associated with excessive supination. Or if you have seen the signs from your wet footprints or looking at an old pair of shoes, then you should definitely have one of these tests done.

Buyer’s Guide: What Should You Look for when You Choose Running Shoes for Supination

With the vast array of models and brands of different running shoes available, there are so many considerations to think about. This includes traction, support, durability, and comfort. If you would like to invest in the very best shoes for supination, here are the primary factors to consider:

Type Of Supination

Before you decide to buy any type of running shoe you need to find out about your foot type. It is important to know what pronation or supination type you have. This could include under-pronation, neutral-pronation, or over-pronation.

Over-pronation occurs when the individual’s weight is transferred from first the heel onto the toe, yet in a fashion that is exaggerated. To deal with this issue the shoes you choose need medial support, along with a midsole that has a dual-density in order to combat your over-pronation.

Neutral-pronation means that your body weight is not shifting viably. In most cases, the weight will shift inwards, yet this shift is usually not adequate to relieve the stress to the outer foot. The shoes dedicated to neutral-pronation typically come with a metal backing, along with a dense mid-sole to relieve and alleviate this stress.

Under-pronation which is more commonly called supination means the foot will not pronate and all your weight is rolled to the outer parts of each foot. This will result in shin splints, ankle sprains, and in some cases plantar fasciitis. To deal with supination, the shoes you should be looking at should feature a very strong cushion which is aimed at shock dispersion. They also go by the name of “movement control” shoes. These running shoes type feature flatter outsoles and the medial sections have additional padding.

Arch Support

This is an important factor for any shoes that you buy, yet even more important for those that have supination. Look for the shoes which come with an arch that is cushioned to stabilize and support the foot. High arch support will be better if you have supination, yet you are also able to use orthopedic inserts when you want to customize your arch for the ideal support and comfort.

Cushioning

When it comes to supination, mitigating any impacts is vital. You need to find running shoes that have more than enough cushioning so that they can soften the impact of your feet constantly hitting the road or ground. The right amount of cushioning can assist with supination and ensure your feet stay comfortable and pain-free for those long runs.

Breathability

Another important factor to consider when you buy supination shoes involves breathability. Feet that are constantly sweaty are not happy feet, which is why shoes that come with a breathable mesh-upper are always great. Gel soles and uppers also contribute to breathability and help keep the feet healthy and dry. This helps to wick away moisture and assist with preventing irritation and infections.

Medial Post

Medial posts are only found in supination shoes. These are inserts which are inserted directly into your shoe or the heel in order to reduce side-to-side motion. These inserts help with increasing stability and controlling impact which are both important when it comes to lowering supination pain.

Heel Support

If you need running shoes to deal with supination, it is also a good idea to look for adequate heel support. A good implant in each heel will stop your feet from rolling to the sides and help reduce supination pain. This is not a necessity in supination shoes, yet is a definite added bonus.

Flexibility

Supination shoes should also be flexible. This is something of importance for all types of workout shoes, yet of particular importance for people with supination. When the shoes are flexible, they reinforce a more natural step in the way of increasing the inward movement. This is the reason why soft midsole footwear is the better option when it comes to supination shoes. It is best to avoid the dual-density midsoles if you have supination.

Durability

When you are paying a lot for a pair of supination shoes, you want to ensure durability. The quality brands such as Under Armour, Nike, Asics, New Balance, and Saucony are usually made from super durable materials. The treads are very important, so make sure you read a few reviews to find out which shoes are the most durable.

Traction

Traction is very important for remaining upright and is very important if you have supination and you need shoes to workout or exercise with. If you need to stay steady and upright, the shoes with good traction can really help. These types of shoes feature deep treads and thick soles. These shoes will also prevent you from sliding around or slipping.

The Fit and Feel

Over and above all the mentioned considerations, the feel and fit of the shoe are also very important. If you are buying the shoes just for supination or not, they must fit correctly. Make sure the shoes you buy come with a return option. If they give you a pinching sensation or they are too tight, then they don’t fit well. It is also important that your feet are not sliding around in the shoes, as this means they are too large. This is very bad if you have supination. You want a snug fit that is not tight. When you try them on trying running down or up a flight of stairs or running on the spot to make sure they feel right.

Price

How much you are prepared to spend is also something to consider before you buy a pair of supination shoes. Shoes are not meant to last forever, so keep this in mind before you spend. You need shoes that feel comfortable, and some cost a lot more than others. The quality shoes are typically made from materials of a higher quality and usually last longer in comparison to the cheaper shoes. The specialized orthopedic footwear is also more expensive, yet you should never put price tags on your overall health.

Brand

If you are a loyalist to brands, the brand that you choose will probably be important to you. Luckily, there are various brands on our list which feature the top-rated supination shoes. From New Balance to Asics to Under Armour and Nike, we are sure you will find a brand that you like. It is also important to consider that your favorite brand may not offer the best type of shoe for your foot type.

Getting Ready For The Run: How To Avoid Injuries

If you see signs of supination, it is advisable that you plan on undergoing treatment. Supination treatment involves supporting shoes that have inserts and improving physical form. Supination exercises can also be beneficial. Here are some tips on how to change the condition and avoid injuries:

Choose Your Running Shoes With Consideration

If your pronation is severe and you have high arches, go for running shoes that are designed for people with high arches. These shoes have enough padding around the heel area and provide support to arches so that strides are less painful. Furthermore, these shoes come with extra cushioning, essential for absorbing shock.

Do Not Stay On Your Feet for Extended Periods

If you are on your feet for extended periods, this could lead to inflammation and may increase the pain you feel. It is, therefore, advisable that you take short breaks every time you feel your feet getting tense.

Perform These Procedures to Ease Pain

Once you have felt pain, rest your feet and cool them for a couple of minutes. After a while apply a compression bandage and keep the foot raised. This action sequence should help ease the pain.

Do Some Exercises

Stretch and strengthen your feet to alleviate pain and prevent further injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is under-pronation a long-term problem?

This is one of many questions you’ll probably end up asking yourself when you realize that you are suffering from under-pronation. The good thing is that it’s a temporary issue that, if diagnosed and treated promptly, and the proper measures to protect your foot and to improve your stride are taken, it can be corrected and reversed. Make sure that you visit your doctor and follow the instructions – the do’s and don’ts – given. By doing so, you can rest assured that you’ll be back to normal in no time at all.

What could happen if I do not address the problem?

It’s not advisable to ever ignore any medical conditions regardless of their severity – be it minor or significant. It’s worth keeping in mind that your feet hold the weight of the entire body all day, and when running, they’re under a lot of pressure, stress and shock impacts. If you suffer from under-pronation and don’t make an effort to find running shoes that help alleviate the problem, you could end up damaging your feet even more. At the same time, not addressing the issue will leave you more susceptible to experiencing pains in your ankles, feet, and legs; something that could lead to back pain and reduced running performance.

Is there a way to correct underpronation?

Yes, the condition can be corrected by wearing shoes that’ll help rollover weight or getting orthopedic inserts.

Apart from running, can supination shoes be used as everyday shoes?

Yes. However, it depends on the design of the supination shoes you get. Most supination shoes on the market are versatile and can be worn for other activities except running – it could be jogging, walking, work, or even working out on treadmills.

How long does it take for supination to be treated?

While there’s no fixed period for the injury, most people tend to experience relief once they take good care of their feet and wear the right footwear. There is no need to worry, though, as the problem doesn’t last that long since it comes about as a result of the ankle twisting, which cures with time.

Bottom Line

After a jog in the park or a long walk, you stop and experience nothing but pain. Soon after, you learn that under-pronation is the problem. Chances are, it’s been affecting you for some time now, and now you’re ready to address the issue. You are not alone; supination affects millions of people around the world. The great thing is that there are so many footwear options available that are designed to help correct the problem. However, it is worth noting that some shoes might not work for you and that different footwear offers different solutions.

In this piece, we will be providing you with a list of shoes that’ll help remedy your supination problem, walking on the sides of your feet or pushing off the pain could lead to a multitude of issues – but the good thing is that there’s a way to address the problem. When using the sides of your feet to walk, you let your foot absorb all the impact, which causes pain. A reliable set of supination footwear should help you avoid this. Getting a good pair of shoes that absorb shock and changing your gait can prevent most of the issues people with under-pronation experience. With the options provided on this list, a pain-free life is only a click away. So, what are you waiting for?
