What You Should Know about Skateboard Bearings?

Bearings on skateboards are the rounded metal pieces that fit onto each wheel on a skateboard. Bearings serve the purpose of assisting with mounting the wheels on a longboard or skateboard into an axle. Even though the wheel sizes can be different, most bearings come in a standard size. Most models also usually fit all types of skateboarding wheels.

The skateboard bearings usually come in a universal measurement which includes 22mm for the outer-diameter, 8mm for the cores, and 7mm in width. Many of the manufacturers sell these bearings in sets. Most sets include 8 bearings as every wheel requires 2 bearings. They also come in different colors, which allows you to choose the colors that match up to your preferred style.

What is a Skateboard Bearing Made up of?

While the bearings on skateboards are usually small in their size, you might be surprised to know that they are actually quite complex when you take them apart. Some of the beginners mistake these small balls as separate parts of their skateboard. The bearings need to be split up manually to see what is actually inside these components.

With this in mind, the bearings are made up of very small components. These include the following:

C-Ring

This is a ring which goes inside the groove on the exterior of the actual bearing. The c-ring ensures that the shield is securely locked.

Bearing Shield

This part is slightly larger than the C-ring. This is a medium-sized ring located to one side of the bearing. This part ensures that the ball bearings are protected from dirt, dust, and debris.

Outer Ring

This is the rounded metal exterior which all the other parts fit precisely into.

Inner Ring

A smaller version of the Outer-Ring, this ring fits into the outer-ring. For a more detailed description, this is the place where the axle will fit through when sliding the bearing onto an axle.

Street Balls

This part is typically made up of set that contains 6 to 7 ceramic, titanium or steel balls. These balls fit inside a ball retainer. Without these balls, the bearings would not work efficiently as they play a pivotal role when it comes to ensuring that the bearing-casing spins around them.

Ball Retainer

The other name for this part includes the Derlin crown. This part makes sure that every ball bearing is held securely in place while allowing each casing to spin-on-the-axis.

Rubber Seal

This is a rubber ring that protects the bearing from the outside. It also helps to keep debris and dirt out of the inside of these bearings.

Important tip: The skateboard bearings will not perform well if any of these components are not working properly. Maintenance on a regular schedule is recommended as the buildup of dirt is inevitable, especially when skateboarding outdoors.

The Materials Used for Bearings

There are few different material options when it comes to skateboard bearings. Some of the popular materials include:

Steel

The steel bearings happen to be the most common material used. Many skateboarders regard steel as a preferable choice for skate bearings as it is one of the industry standards in the world of skateboarding.

With this type of material, it is common for the bearings to have a circular shape and flat sides. Each of the bearings holds between 7 to 8 lubricated balls which are made to distribute the weight of the load and to minimize tension or stress between the wheels and the axle.

The main advantage of steel has to do with its affordability and durability. However, there are times when energy that is triggered by heavy friction that occurs between the axle and wheels causes the metal to heat up. This may cause the bearings to either expand or become less effective over time. This is why the bearings need to stay lubricated, clean, and dry which will assist them in working more effectively and lasting longer.

Ceramic

Another popular alternative includes the ceramic bearings which are in most cases made from a compound known as silicon nitride. When compared to steel, this material promotes a ride that is smoother, while ceramic overall is a much harder material. Due to the increased hardness, ceramic produces far less friction, which means they need less lubrication.

It is also less affected when it comes to heat energy. When friction is present, the ceramic materials do not expand. This does contribute to an impact that is negative to your overall performance when out on your board. The one drawback to an increase in performance also contributes to an increase in the price tag. However, it is still an excellent choice when you are prepared to spend a bit more to achieve excellent performance when out on your board.

Titanium

Titanium might not be as well-known or popular like steel and ceramic materials, yet it does work well on skateboards. Titanium bearings are known for being light and smooth without the need to sacrifice on speed and durability.

In regards to performance and speed, ceramic is regarded as the best choice. As we mentioned earlier on, ceramic is harder and smoother when compared to steel, which also promotes a faster ride. Even though they cost more, the advantages of ceramic is definitely a worthwhile choice when it comes to skateboard bearings.

What Makes the Bearings Go Fast?

One of the main factors to look at when determining how fast bearings will go includes their ABEC rating. This rating is important if you want to ensure you are choosing the fastest types. Different types of bearing sizes and dimensions for skateboards are designed for a different purpose.

If you choose the bearings that come with an ABEC rating of 3, these bearings are on the slower end. Choose the bearings with the highest ratings if you want to benefit from speed when using your skateboard. If you would like a fast-moving skateboard look for the ABEC ratings of 7 or more.

In addition to these ratings, you should also think about replacing the smaller wheels on a skateboard with bigger ones. This will also assist with making your skateboard move faster.

ABEC Along with Other Rated Bearings

ABEC is the abbreviation for Annular Bearing Engineering Committee that provides the ratings for the different skateboard bearings which is an indication of the speed and performance of each product. The ABEC rating is the industry standard when it comes to determining the precision of the ball bearings.

In the majority of the cases, the higher ratings translate into more precise and efficient balls inside the bearings. The higher ratings are also an indication of lower tolerance when it comes to errors. Here are the different ABEC ratings that you should know about:

ABEC 1

These bearings typically have the very lowest precision levels and are usually the reason why they are the cheapest on the market. Most companies will not sell these bearings as they are regarded as low quality. Yet, they still work well for skateboarding and are only slightly slower in comparison to the bearings with a higher rating.

ABEC 3

In general, these skateboard bearings come in at an affordable price point. The drawback to these bearings is that they fail to roll as speedily and smoothly as the higher ratings do.

ABEC 5

This level is regarded as a standard rating when it comes to most of the skateboard bearings. They deliver performance and speed that is decent at reasonable prices.

ABEC 7

These levels often come in at an increased price. This also has to the with an indication that the bearings will perform more smoothly and faster.

ABEC 9

The bearings with a minimum rating of 9 are regarded as extremely fast. For this reason, these are the best bearings to use for skating downhills. It is also a preferable option for the more experienced skaters that are looking to move much faster.

ABEC 11 and UP

There are a few companies that advertise these ratings yet it is important to take caution when it comes to these ratings. This is because the rating that is the highest for a skateboard is typically 9.

There are also other bearings that are rated by organizations which include the ISO, which stands for the International Standards Organization, the RBEC “Anti-Fascist Bearing Manufacturers Association”, along with the German National Standards Organizations. However, the more well-known rating is still the ones from ABEC.

Skateboard Bearing Size

The normal size of a skateboard bearing is 608. As a matter of fact, this is actually the original size of a ball bearing. As such, when you decide to go for the 608 series, you will notice that the ball bearing comes with optional closures, ball retainer, inner and outer race, and balls.

The 608 series is characterized by its 7 mm width, 22 mm outer diameter, and 8 mm inner diameter. It reflects its own ABEC rating. ABEC rating simply a way of measuring manufacturing and dimensional tolerances. The series should fit all wheels designed for a skateboard not matter how big their diameters are.

Apart from the common 608 series size, there are many other types and sizes of skateboard bearings that include the Y-beating, Roller Bearings, mini-bearing. Nevertheless, these options are not commonly used in skateboards, because of the general design of a skateboard. With the 608 bearing design, bearing balls rotate between two rings (the outer and inner rings).

They have always featured rubber or metal shields; whose work is to seal the whole unit. The main function of these bearing shields is to minimize or prevent contaminants like dust or particles from getting into the bearing balls as well as maintaining lubricant from leaking.

Bearing Options

Bearing Spacers

Bearing spacers are metal cylinders that are placed between two bearings, which helps spread weight evenly across the whole bearing. Some bearings do not have these spacers. However, if you are a hardcore skateboarder, doing stunts that lead to hard landings, then you need a bearing that has a bearing spacer.

Although skateboard bearings come in one size, spacers are available in different sizes. Spacer size is measured by both its overall width and axle diameter. Identifying the spacer width, you need is very simple. Generally, longboards use 10 mm bearing spacers while ordinary skateboards use 8 mm. Many bearings come with spacers, but others have to be bought separately.

For you to install the spacer, it must be done when installing the bearing. The moment you have put the bearing, flip the wheel, and push the bearing spacers in place. It will hold firmly when installed firmly. However, whenever you experience wiggling, that is a sign, the spacer is too small. If they fit perfectly, you can then put the rest of the bearings.

Speed Washers

Speed washers are thin metal rings that are installed between the wheels and the axle nut. The function of the speed washer is to reduce friction while skating. This makes the wheel to rotate unrestricted, which only means more speed and free movement.

Bearing Shield

This is a plastic cover that covers bearing balls. The main function of it is to minimize water, dirt, and other particles that may interfere with the movement of the bearing. It does also help improve the lifespan of the bearing. Research shows that some skaters remove this plastic using a knife thinking that they are improving their bearing, but this is far from the truth. Exposing the balls actually decreases its durability and not recommended for performance.

The Bearing Break-In Period

The truth is that bearing last for long before they begin to wear down. This is why others prefer using second-hand bearing over new ones, as a way of trying to cut cost. However, if you do this, be prepared to change its performance. It is always wise to buy new bearings as they will not only be durable but offer excellent performance.

Bearing Maintenance

The good news is that there are ways you can improve the life and efficiency of a skateboard bearing. How do you do this? Well, doing the following will do the trick.

  • Bearing Lube/Oil – Lubricating the bearings will help reduce friction significantly. Furthermore, this does help clean a bearing also, by removing dirt and eliminate loud squeaking noises.
  • Bearing Cleaner Kits – This is a kit that contains a bearing lubricant, alcohol solution, and a metal rod. You are supposed to use the metal rod to soak a bearing into the alcohol solution. The aim is first to clean it. After some time, let the bearing air dry and then soak it in the lubricant. These kits are very affordable, and experts recommend cleaning your bearings at least once or twice a year.
  • Bearing Removal Tools – These are tools that will help you install and remove bearings with ease and safely. Through such tools, you will not damage the bearing itself, axle, or other parts.

Where were They Made?

There are 3 countries known to manufacture bearings. These countries include:

China

Bearings from china have a reputation for being of low quality and cost as well. However, in recent times, their quality has been increasing steadily. As a matter of fact, they are now competing with other countries. One of the best bearing quality is Bones Bearing, which is now manufactured in China.

Switzerland

The founder of the most popular Bones bearings, George Powell, formed this brand by working with Swiss suppliers during its early stages. These bearings are specifically designed for skateboards. Before this brand came into existence, all skateboard bearings were made to industrial-grade, designed for manufacturing. However, Bones set the standard for performance and quality from the first time it came into the market. Today, they are still one of the leading brands.

United States

The truth is that not many skateboard bearings are made in America. That is because production is expensive.

How to Remove Bearing Shields?

There are many different types of shields, and each comes with different ways of removal.

Rubber Shields

With a rubber shield, it is one of the easiest to remove, and all you need is a paperclip. Poke the shield slightly and gently lift the clip out. The moment you finish cleaning your bearing, just clip the rubber back by pushing around the edges until it snaps tightly.

Metal Shield

With a metal shied, you should use a needle or pin to remove the seal ring with a small gap or opening. To prevent it from turning, press the other side so that you can remove it effectively. Lift the seal ring gently and when it is off, tap your bearing, and the shield will come off. The moment you are through with cleaning put the shield back and insert the seal ring back.

How to Make Bearing Spin Faster?

The only way to make a bearing to work efficiently and spin faster is thorough cleaning. What does this mean? Well, if you only clean it frequently and adding new lube will affect its efficiency.

How to Clean Skateboard Bearings?

Cleaning a skateboard bearing need time and a little bit of effort. The whole procedure will be worth it. All you have to do is follow the steps above to remove the bearing first. The next step is setting up your cleaning station. You should first start by wiping off visible dirt and then soak into a jar of cleaning solution to clean it fully. After soaking for a while, let it air dry and then apply lubricant. To make drying fast, you should wipe them with a soft cloth and shake.

For about 10 minutes, you should also soak them in acetone and then lubricate after they have dried. Replace rubber shields and then install them.

How to Install Skateboard Bearings?

Do you want to install new or already cleaned skateboard bearings? Well, the process is fairly easy. First, you should note that many skateboard bearings have colored shields. As such, to install them, you should ensure that the side is facing out. To secure the bearings firmly into the wheels, you can use the board’s axle. Before doing this, take off the washer and the nut. Put your bearing through the axle and then the wheel. Apply pressure by pressing heavily until the bearing fits into the wheel. Do the same thing on the opposite side of the wheel.

Do this for all wheels, and of course, you will need to install them correctly after you have completed. Wiggle the wheels a bit, forth and back on the board to ensure you have fitted everything correctly.

Conclusion

By design and function, we are correct by saying that bearings are one of the most important accessories or component of a skateboard. A skateboard cannot be a skateboard without bearings. As a matter of fact, they play a huge role such as rolling, distributing weight evenly, provide stability, and much more. For this reason, you have to make a wise decision regarding your choice of bearings.

Remember: a good skateboard bearing is one that helps eliminate friction, wear, and tear, which can affect axle metal, wheel, and performance or the whole unit.

With the many options available today, you need to take your time to do a bit of research to know the best products. Only through this technique, you will not only be an informed buyer but knowledgeable, giving you the power of options and the ability to choose the best that suits your needs.
