Best Tire Pressure Gauges

The best way to ensure your vehicle is in optimal condition and to lower the risks of accidents is to monitor the pressure in your tires. Tires that have not been correctly inflated happen to be one amongst the top reasons behind many accidents which occur daily across the world. In addition to causing accidents on the roads, tires that are poorly inflated also contribute towards increasing maintenance and fuel costs of your vehicle.

So to make sure your tires are always in the best condition, it is critical to check regularly on the pressure in the tires. It is not difficult to maintain the correct tire pressure, and this is even easier when you invest in a good quality pressure gauge. It is a good idea to own your own one as it can assist you in keeping track of tire pressure all the time.

1. TEKTON Instant Read Digital Tire Gauge With Lighted Nozzle – 100 PSI | 5941 – Editor’s Choice & Best Seller

  • Ergonomic design comfortably fits hand and features a soft, non-slip...

TEKTON is not one of the familiar brands when it comes to tire pressure gauges, yet their brand of digital tire-pressure gauges is one of their top sellers. This is a budget-friendly device that is ergonomic and features a body made out of metal which is able to produce accurate readings. The nozzle and illuminated display are extremely useful, yet the largest benefit is that it won’t leak air, which usually causes your tires to lose air and deflate.

There are a number of other digital tire-pressure gauges which cost a lot more, yet fail to provide accurate readings, and the build quality is also not that great. TEKTON is durable thanks to the metal construction and it is also extremely reliable as it doesn’t leak pressure, while consistently providing accurate readings each time you use it.

One of the stand-out advantages of this device is the ability of the valve-steam to seal just about immediately once the nozzle is attached. This lowers air pressure loss when you measure your tire pressure. The design of the TEKTON Digital Tire Gauge 5941 handle makes it simple to use while ensuring you are able to apply pressure without the risk of the gauge falling or slipping out of your hand.

Pros
  • Accurate readings and this device is able to read pressure to a maximum of 100 psi
  • No air-pressure leaks
  • Illuminated nozzle and display
  • Works with every valve type except Presta
Cons
  • The batteries do not last long, and the device takes up lots of energy

2. Accutire MS-4021B Digital Tire Pressure Gauge

Accutire MS-4021B Digital Tire Pressure Gauge
  • Heavy duty construction and rugged design for long lasting use
  • Angled head and rubber coated handle for easy gripping
  • Large, easy-to-read LCD display
  • Equipped with an automatic shut off to prevent deflation
  • Accurate to within 0.05 PSI, reading air pressure from 5-150 PSI in...

The Accutire MS-4021B is to date among the top sellers when it comes to digital tire-pressure gauges, and it deserves a place on our list for very good reasons. This device is advertised as an affordable, heavy-duty gauge. The gauge features a metal build with a few plastic elements. It operates efficiently and provides accurate readings.

There is not much negative to mention when it comes to this device. The overall build uses an ergonomic handle and metal body, while the design is angled which adds to the longevity of this product and makes it incredibly easy-to-use. This is one of the very few digital tire-pressure gauges that comes with a durable rubberized grip.

This device provides highly accurate readings and is able to measure pressure in PSI within 2 decimals, and air-pressure ranges from 5 to 150 PSI. The budget-friendly price tag has also contributed to why this product is so popular. It also features an automatic shut off system which stops pressure leaks, which puts this device ahead of its competitors.

Pros
  • The digital display is easy and clear to read even when not illuminated
  • The universal nozzle and rubberized grip works well with any valve, excepting the Presta
  • The automatic shutoff function prevents tire deflation
Cons
  • Nothing that is worthwhile mentioning

This gauge is ultra-slim and can even fit inside a glove compartment in a car, or in a pocket, making it the ideal gift for a man.

This device features a non-slip texture which makes it very easy to hold and use, while the backlit LCD and lighted nozzle make it ideal for both night and day use.

This model comes with a basic on/off button, yet it will also shut off automatically after 30 to 40 seconds of no activity, which contributes towards saving the life of the battery.

The digits are very clear to read which makes it an easy task to measure the pressure in your tires.

You are able to achieve accurate readings in increments of 0.1. It comes with 4 settings that offer a range of 0-150Psi, 0-10Bar, 0-10Kgf/cm2, and 0-1000KPA.

Pros
  • Inexpensive
  • The automatic shut off function conserves the battery
Cons
  • Can produce different readings for one tire
  • Doesn’t work with the Presta stems

This device may look slightly old-school, yet since it comes from the TireTek brand, this product is excellent for many good reasons. To begin with, this is a mechanical gauge which comes with an ANSI B40.1 Grade B Certification.

What this means is that it is under 2% discrepancy and variation when you use it, which makes it highly precise. It is not just accurate but also highly durable.

Made from brass and steel, it features a rubberized cover for protection, which means even if you accidentally drop the device it will not get damaged or scratched.

Another great advantage is the mechanical gauge which means you do not need batteries. In addition, you can use this device in any type of weather and not have to worry about its functionality.

Another great feature about the TireTek Premium Pressure Gauge is the large dial, which offers a clear reading of the pressure inside your tires, without the need to try and work out tiny prints and numbers.

However, some users have reported that they had a problem with getting these gauges to seal when trying to inflate the tire. However, with a bit of practice, this shouldn’t be an issue for much longer.

Pros
  • Constructed out of durable materials, which adds to the longevity of this device
  • Comes with an ANSI B40.1 Certification which offers proof associated with the high standards of this company
Cons
  • Slightly complex to use, more to do with sealing the tire valves

5. JACO Elite Tire Pressure Gauge – 60 PSI

  • Robust engineering - fully equipped with a built-in air bleeder valve...

  • FREE 100% Lifetime Satisfaction Guarantee by JACO Superior Products...

This could be the very best of the analog tire-pressure gauges when based on appearances ( and possibly functionality). The best part about this device is the fact that it matches the Accuracy Standards of the ANSI Grade B40.1 (around 2%).

However, this device is very heavy and is made from heavy-duty solid components such as steel and brass.

It also features a rubber shell which surrounds each side of this gauge, which also makes it a good blunt weapon. You could basically run a tank over this device and it will still remain functional.

In addition, it also features an inbuilt “air bleeder” valve, which can assist you with easily and gradually lowering the tire pressure which is over-inflated. This device measures 0 to 60 PSI range in single increments.

One of the added features about the JACO Elite Tire Pressure Gauge is the glow-in-the-dark increment scales and dials. This offers an easy method to read these numbers even when it is dark outside.

It also comes with a 360-degree swivel chuck which provides simple and easy access to your tire valves from just about any angle you can think of.

Some customers have mentioned that the connections to the valves fit awkwardly. But when you get the placement right they fit perfectly. This should not be an issue if you use the device with care.

Pros
  • Excellent construction in the design and utility
  • Glow-in-the-dark dials and increment scales
  • Comes with a useful “air bleeder” valve
Cons
  • The valve connection can be difficult (to start off with) when it comes to connecting to your tires.

This is a digital tire inflator that comes with a pressure gauge. It can be used to check the pressure of a tire to see if it’s deflated and if it is it can be used to put air back into the tire until it has the desired amount of pressure.

It is extremely accurate and will be within 1% of the precise pressure that is in the tire. It comes with a bleed valve, gage, inflation gun, a chuck, and a hose. It is constructed of stainless steel and is very durable. It has an auto turn off feature that helps preserve the battery which turns the unit off after 20 seconds of not being used.

  • FREE 100% Lifetime Satisfaction Guarantee by JACO Superior Products...

This particular digital tire inflator gauge is one that is more advanced than some of the others on this list. It’s extremely sturdy and flexible and it comes with a variety of attachments. This unit is extremely accurate. The gage itself has a nice digital display that shows different measurement units and can show pressure up to 200 PSI.

When compared to other units the FloPro is much better. The overall quality is better and it’s flexible hose makes it considerably easier to use. The display is digital and illuminated and the unit can be used with almost any kind of tire valve. One issue we found with this is that the gage sometimes leaks air through its shaft. When it’s used frequently and over a long period of time an internal rubber ring starts to be loose and that’s what causes the issue.

Pros
  • The illuminated digital display is easy to read
  • It has a classic design that looks and works traditionally
  • It has a built-in bleeder valve
Cons
  • Its only issue is that with repeated use over a long period of time it sometimes starts to leak air

Pros
  • It can record the factory recommended tire pressure
  • It has an easy-to-read LED display and flashlight
  • It’s very easy to use

Cons
  • It doesn’t work if it’s too cold
  • It’s not the best tire gauge for motorcycles

For those looking for an inflator that is commercial grade and is capable of giving the same measurements as an air compressor then this is a great choice. It has a backlit display and easy to read numbers. When it senses the tire pressure the gage will turn on automatically and you have the option to turn it on by pressing a button. It even has a feature that allows you to change between PSI, Kpa, and bar.

It has a high precision rate so you’re better assured of getting the correct reading. It has a range that goes all the way up to 255 PSI. It’s built extremely sturdy and will last a long time even under heavy use.

If you need a decent digital gauge that is cheap and one you can carry in your pocket, then this is the right digital tire pressure gauge. This unit is small and comes with an illuminated display and nozzle. It’s extremely easy to use and has basic features and a simple design.

The unit is made of all metal which makes it strong and durable but it ends up being heavy for its size. Even though it’s very small it ends up feeling like carrying around a rock in your pocket. It does have an ergonomic design and a digital gauge. It is capable of working fine for showing the pressure of most tires regardless of the style of valves and it’s pretty easy to use. It has a very low price but it does have the drawback of not working with Presta tire valves.

Pros
  • Extremely Compact and can be carried in your pocket
  • Very inexpensive and easy to use
  • Illuminated nozzle and display that is easy to read
Cons
  • Even though it’s small and strong it’s heavy
  • The body is made of all metal which makes it durable but unexpectedly heavy

Understanding the Importance of Tire Pressure

When it comes to the different things someone might try to diagnose about their vehicle, the tire pressure is the last thing the average person thinks of. Even so, it is something that should be examined. Here are four important points on why checking the tire pressure is important.

1. Fuel Economy

Gas prices go up and down and are not under your control but maintaining your tire pressure to help improve your vehicle’s fuel economy is something you can do. This is especially important if you do a lot of driving for work or travel and you want to get the most mileage for your money. Using a quality tire pressure gauge lets you make sure the tires are aired up properly and not wasting your fuel.

2. Reduce Your Vehicle’s Strain

When you fail to keep the correct amount of tire pressure in the tire it puts a lot of undue stress on it and the car. When all the tires on the vehicle have the right amount of pressure then it takes the strain off of many parts of the auto. It helps it to be the correct height from the pavement and it’s safer when you hit a pothole.

3. The Ride Is Smoother

When your car rides more smoothly then you and the passengers will be happier. Even though that might be the motivation for keeping the tires at the correct pressure there are still some pretty significant reasons that you might want to do so in addition to that reason. When you allow for an unnecessary strain on the vehicle it can lead to tire damage which leaves you stranded on the side of the road. It can mean that you have to be towed somewhere to get the tires fixed or replaced.

4. Improve Your Stopping Distance By Getting Better Braking

When your tire pressure is correct in all your tires then your brakes will work better. When you fail to have the correct amount of pressure in the tires then it takes a longer distance before you can come to a complete stop. If the tires are seriously under-inflated then the reduced stopping power will be significant. To get the best performance out of your tires it will be necessary to keep them properly inflated at all times.

Various Types of Tire Pressure Gauges

There are 3 main types of tire pressure gauges. They include digital, dial and stick. They all have different features and quality, but one thing that they all have is a similar pressure range.

You can expect a pressure range of up to 60 psi. However, there are some gauges that go even further and reach up to 99 psi. Ideally, these are the gauges you should look for.

You will come across 4 different types of measurements units on these gauges. The different units include:

  • Bar – This is a non-SI unit of pressure. [1 bar = 100000 Pa]
  • kgf/cm2 – kilogram-force per square centimeter [This is also a non-SI unit used in Europe and, 1 kgf/cm2 = 98066.5 Pa]
  • kPa – Kilopascal [Commonly used in Europe, 1 kPa= 1000 Pa]
  • PSI – Pounds per square inch [Most popular unit, 1 PSI= 6894.76 Pa]

Stick Gauge

This gauge looks like a pencil or a pen. It is typically small, compact and very portable. It is also affordable and easy to use. You can take this gauge with you wherever you go.

However, stick gauges are not as accurate as other types of pressure gauges. They are sometimes difficult to read. But, if you are looking for a compact and convenient gauge, this is the type of gauge for you.

Pros
  • Range of 0 to 120 psi
  • Can easily access hard to reach areas of your tires
  • Very portable and compact
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Not very precise or accurate as other types of gauges
  • Have only two units of measurements
  • Sometimes difficult to read

Dial Gauge

Dial tire pressure gauges look like clocks. They are analog in nature, just like stick gauges and use a moving needle to indicate pressure levels. They come in different sizes and shapes, and also come with various add-ons such as extension hoses and bleeder valves.

Dial gauges can be heavy, but many people tend to love them for their classic look. They are easy to read and are also very accurate in most cases.

Pros
  • Can work well in all conditions
  • Can measure up to 160 psi
  • Durable
  • Comes with extension hoses and bleeder valves
  • Big display that makes reading units easy
Cons
  • A few reading problems may occur
  • Requires two hands to use with extension hose
  • Heavy

Digital Gauge

Last but not least, we have digital tire pressure gauges. These look like small calculators with a tiny LCD display. They are resistant to both dust and dirt, but cannot withstand impact from blunt force or hard falls.

Digital tire pressure gauges are probably the easiest to use because they come with LED indicator lights that allow you to work in the dark. You will need some batteries when using digital gauges as they can run out.

Pros
  • Range of 5 to 150 psi
  • Easy to use
  • Resistant to dust and dirt
  • Clear LCD display
  • Glow in the dark
  • Precise readings
  • Compact and lightweight
Cons
  • Not sturdy
  • Battery powered
  • Not suitable for use in freezing weather

Buying Guide

The International Security Driver Association frequently sensitizes drivers on the importance of checking tire pressure and making sure it’s at the right level.

There are numerous factors you to need to consider when looking for a quality tire pressure gauge. Some of the crucial things you should check for in a tire pressure gauge, regardless of the type of tire of gauge you go for include:

Ease of Use

The first thing you should consider is ease of use. This should be your number one priority as you don’t want to get a gauge that will be difficult to operate. You should check whether you can use the gauge with only one hand or you need two. As mentioned above, only stick and digital gauge provide one-handed use while dial gauges require two hands. You should make sure that you can easily access your tire nozzles with the gauge you choose.

Durability

The next thing you should consider is durability. Will the gauge last? Durability heavily depends on the materials used to make the gauge. Some materials are obviously easier to break than others. You should avoid gauges that start showing signs of wear and tear just a few weeks after getting. Durability can easily interfere with the precision and accuracy of a gauge.

With proper care and maintenance, it’s possible for you to use one tire pressure gauge for many years. Why keep on buying gauges every year when you can buy a single durable gauge that will last you for a long time.

Next, you should consider how easy it is to read the units on the gauge. You should avoid getting a gauge that is hard to read. Remember, you need to be able to use the gauge both during the day and at night (a digital gauge may come in handy at night).

Size

Another important factor to consider is size of the gauge. The size of the gauge will affect the size of the display. A very small display will definitely have very small numbers that will be hard to read.

On the other hand, a large gauge with a large display will not be very compact and portable. The gauge may also not fit properly into your glove compartment. The key here is to strike a healthy balance between size and portability.

PSI Range

The PSI range of a tire pressure gauge shows how much air pressure it can handle. You should always aim to get a gauge that matches the PSI range requirements of your car. Some cars have tires that require different pressure levels. You should check your car’s user manual to establish the recommended pressure for all your car’s tires.

You can also get tire pressure information from the tire placard placed on the car’s door, fuel door or glove compartment. The most important thing is to get a gauge that will be able to read the maximum pressure of your tires.

So, if your tires have a maximum psi rating of 40, then you need to get a gauge that has a range higher that 40 psi.

PSI Increments

PSI increments are those tiny changes that occur as tire pressure goes up or down. You should ideally get a gauge that can read very small psi increments. Small increment readability is crucial especially if you really want to get the tire pressure right. Most low-quality gauges do not have small increment readability.

Accuracy

Another crucial factor to consider is accuracy. You should look for a gauge that provides you with accurate tire pressure readings. Most gauges achieve maximum accuracy at middle range. However, there are some gauges that offer accurate readings right from 0 psi – but they are very few.

So, if you tire has a pressure 42 psi, and after using two different gauges you get readings of 32 and 44 psi respectively, then a suitable gauge is one with 44 psi or higher.

Also, if you have huge tires, small pressure differences of 3% to 5% may not matter much. There are some digital readings that offer very precise readings so there is nothing to worry about.

As you can already tell, it’s not easy to buy a gauge without doing some testing. The safest bet for you is to go with a reputable brand that is known to offer accurate readings.

Hose Length

Hose length only matter if you choose to go with a dial gauge. With that said, try and pick a gauge with a long hose. The long hose will make your work a lot easier.

Weight

Next, you should check on the weight of the gauge. Don’t pick a gauge that will be difficult to carry around. You can always go with a compact and portable product like a stick gauge.

Application

Where will you be using your gauge. If it’s for personal use, then you can go for a compact and lightweight gauge. On the other hand, if you are going to use the gauge in a tire shop, it’s better to go for the heavy duty gauge.

Price

When it comes to price, the only thing you should remember is that cheap is expensive. Most cheap gauges do not last, and high-quality gauges do not come cheap. So, just invest in a good gauge. It doesn’t have to be too expensive.

Add-Ons

Last but not least are add-ons. Look for additional features such as holding pressure, protective bumper, bleed air ability, face size, and chucks. These add-ons are particularly important to professional drivers and car enthusiasts.

How to Adjust and Check Tire Pressure?

Checking the pressure in your tire should only take you a few minutes when you know how to. Here is a guide on how to do it.

  1. The first step is obvious and this includes buying your own pressure gauge. Some people mention that you can choose to use a pressure gauge at a local gas station, and it is not necessary to invest in your own one. Yet the pressure gauges used in gas stations are exposed to different temperatures throughout the year. They are also dropped from time to time, which often means they are not well calibrated.
  2. Find out what the recommended pressure value is for both your back and your front tires. You can find these values in the fuel filler door, your glove compartment or in the doorjamb on the driver’s side.
  3. Remove the screw-off caps from the inflation valve on each tire. Make sure you have put the caps in a place that you will remember to avoid losing them.
  4. Position the end of your pressure gauge into the inflation valve on each tire followed by depressing it. Read the pressure reading, and if correct just replace the cap.
  5. It is important to keep in mind that the front tires will typically have a pressure setting that is different from your back tires.

How to Use a Tire Pressure Gauge?

If the pressure in your tires is below the recommended reading, you will have to fill up this difference. If you do not have a compressor, it is not necessary to invest in one, if you do not want to. In this case, all you need to do is visit your closest gas station followed by connecting your pressure gauge to an air-pressure hose.

It is important not to check on the pressure in your tires while they are still warm. If you have just driven to your gas station, allow the tires to cool down before reading the pressure in each tire. If the nearest gas station is a few hours drive away, it is possible to make adjustments to the values. This approach is not precise, yet the process is still reliable. All you need to do is take a reading of the pressure before driving your car and once you reach the closest gas station you can adjust the pressure reading accordingly.

  • To add air into your tires, connect the compressor to the pressure gauge, an then onto the valve of the tire. Start to add air, and then check on the pressure again. If you see that you need more air, just repeat the same process.
  • If the pressure reading is now too high, lower the reading by pressing on the gauge inside the valve to release some air. Some gauges will come with valves or prongs that will allow for a way to reduce the pressure.

Safety Tips for Tire Gauges

  • Only check the pressure in your tires when your tires are still cold. The morning is usually the best time. If you have been driving your car, wait at least 3 hours to allow the tires to cool down properly before you check on tire pressure.
  • Most manufacturers suggest that you check your tire pressure every month. It is also important to check before you go on a long trip.
  • You should check on the sidewall of the tires or the owner’s manual to find out what the recommended pressure is.
  • Keep your tire gauge in a dry and clean location when not in use. Dust or moisture could result in false readings.
  • After you have checked on your tire pressure make sure you replace the valve caps correctly.
  • Do not leave your tire-pressure gauge out in the scorching sun or freezing cold. This can affect how the device performs and could interfere with its precision.
  • Your car will heat up fast over the summer months, which means you shouldn’t be storing this type of device in a glove compartment.

FAQs

How Will I Know When One Of My Tires Is Going Flat?

If you have checked on your tire pressure on a Monday for example, and by Wednesday you start noticing differences with your handling or driving, and you check on the tire pressure and it has dropped at least 1 psi or more, it means the tire is leaking air. The psi will drop over time, yet 48 to 72 hours should not show impact. If your tire is leaking air you will need to get your tire patched up.

If your tire is losing 1 or more psi every day, the leak is usually bad which means you might need to replace the tire. In most cases, this could be an indication that the other tires are probably also running low.

How Much Air Pressure Should I Be Using For My Tires?

We recommend that you should always follow the instructions from the manufacturer to find out about what air pressure you should be using for your tires. In most cases, this information can be found on the door jam of the driver’s door.

What Will Happen If I Over Inflate My Tires?

Some people are under the wrong impression that over-inflating tires provides improved easier handling and improved fuel mileage. Yet in actual fact, over-inflated tires are dangerous.

Overinflated tires are linked to the following issues:

  • The car will be bouncy or your handling will be poor
  • It results in premature wear to your tires. It could even decrease the lifespan of your tires by as much as 50%. If the tires become hot, it could result in a blow-out.

What Tire Pressure Is Too Low To Drive On?

Low air pressure that is slight, is not an issue that is big. Yet a TPMS light or a 4, 5, or 6 PSI is a bigger problem. In general, the TPMS light will warn you that your tires or tire is under-inflated by 25%.

It is important to take notice when the TPMS light turns on. If you are driving at the time head to your closest gas station.

What Is The Recommended Tire Pressure For 44 PSI Max?

In general, manufacturers will determine tire pressure according to the weight of the vehicle and the tire type. In this case, 44 PSI, will mean this is the load (maximum) that the tire is able to properly handle. This means it is not a good idea to inflate the tires to a 44 PSI pressure.

We suggest keeping the pressure about 10-15% from the max. PSI rating. So if the maximum tire pressure is 44 psi, inflate your tires to 32 – 38 PSI. This will also vary according to the difference between the vehicle and the tires.

Should I Inflate My Tires In Cold Weather?

If you inflate your tires when the temperature is cold outside, make sure you keep your pressure below the max pressure rating. The PSI levels will drop as the temperature outside starts to drop. Air pressure in tires will fall 1 or 2 psi after lowering every 10-degree Fahrenheit temperature. It will also cause your tires to be underinflated.

Conclusion

Using and owning your own pressure gauge contributes towards improving your overall driving experience along with extending the lifespan of your vehicle and the different parts. Making sure the pressure in your tires remains at optimal levels, will extend the longevity of your tires and increase fuel efficiency. Your vehicle will also perform better due to the correct tire pressure which makes your car safer to drive. A good quality tire-pressure gauge will provide a way to make precise and small adjustments easily. Choosing the correct gauge might be confusing, which is why we have listed the top-rated models in our Tire Pressure Gauge review to help you make a more informed decision.
