Best Weight Distribution Hitches

Owning one of the best weight-distribution hitches becomes an amenity that is essential for all towing vehicles.

There are many reasons why you should be mounting this type of system when you tow. Yet the most vital reason has to do with regulating swaying motions associated with the trailer.

Many of us know how terrible it feels when a trailer starts swaying uncontrollably. It often feels like something bad is going to happen.

Towed loads start to sway due to a number of factors. It may include a strong wind or from a quick and sudden turn while the driver is pushing on the gas pedal. Regardless of why the trailer starts to sway, a trailer that is wobbly is dangerous on the roads.

Accidents can occur when the trailer along with a vehicle that is towing the load has not been set up properly.

Losing control of a trailer can result in devastating accidents while out on the roads. To prevent these types of accidents, it becomes necessary to look into buying the right weight-distribution hitch. This is one of the best ways to solve these unwanted movements while towing trailers. They can also optimize the safety of the driver in the way of diffusing the load weight throughout the axle of the vehicle.

This is an equalizer weight-distribution hitch which is one of the more popular models frequently used by campers across the globe. It provides outstanding performance to price ratio along with integrated sway-control which can handle a GTW of 10,000 lbs.

The sway control integrated into this system is highly efficient. It makes use of cam springs which releases pressure associated with the tongue-weight located on each spring bar which is housed in steel brackets which helps to stabilize the trailer when going around corners.

The majority of the parts linked with this system are made from forged steel that is long-lasting and incredibly durable. This is a hitch which is useful as one of the heavy-duty weight-distribution hitches without having to worry about the hitch breaking or failing while out on the roads. The best part about this particular model is the head which has a carbide powder-coat finish that provides more durability.

What’s more, is that the brackets in this distribution system are easy to adjust which provides a more flexible and versatile experience which matches up to the weight and size of the trailer. This is a model which is virtually compatible with all trailer types regardless of whether the trailer is wide or narrow, due to the two 5/16-inch trailer-ball which is already pre-torqued.

Overall, this is an equalizer weight-distribution hitch that combines a great level of weight distribution and sway control which provides a way to tow trailers securely and smoothly.

Pros
  • The support brackets are fully adjustable
  • Compatible with all the A-frame trailers
  • The integrated sway control does away with the need to buy one separately
Cons
  • It is expensive

This hitch is also available in different sizes which include the 600 pounds, the 800 pounds, 1000 pounds, and the 1400 pounds. This brand also offers two styles which include: with a shank and the type without a shank.

In addition, this machine is able to carry a tongue weight maximum of 1,400 pounds along with with a GTW (Gross Trailer Weight) maximum rating of 14,000 pounds.

The shank measures 10-inches in length, and 2-inch X 2-inch size, along with a 5.5-inch rise and a 2.5-inch drop.

Pros
  • The ball mount along with the shank is adjustable which translates into a very even weight-distribution system. This is the type of hitch that can help to keep trailers in a straight line while avoiding or preventing swaying.
  • This hitch comes with less parts.
  • The machine-tampered spring bars are made from steel.
  • The spring bar offers an interchangeable design which offers a positive latching-action along with adjustable hitch clips and a bolt package.

This Weight Distribution Kit has definitely earned its place in this review as it is one of the more widely available products. This brand is very well-known and it also comes with its own friction sway-control system.

The kit comes with an adjustable and flexible shank which is coated with durable steel. This system also includes spring bars which assist with making sure the trailer and towing vehicle have a more level ride.

This is a kit made for the trailers that do not go over 10,000-pound GTW or 1000 tongue weight.

It also features a 2-5/16-inch hitch ball along with a standard-square hitch bar which measures 2-inches with a 5-1/2-inch rise and 1-inch drop and 12 inches in length.

Pros

  • This kit is designed in such a way that it ensures the towing vehicle and trailer stay in a straight line along with a more level and smoother ride.
  • It uses a friction-sway control-system which helps to lower the sway of the trailer.

  • Gross Trailer Weight; up to 12,000 lbs.

The Husky is one of the more advanced weight-distribution hitches that features a large 2-5/16” hitch ball without chains. The sway control which is built-in is extremely smooth which compensates for all movements of the vehicle and the trailer.

Provided the trailer is not more than 12,000 lbs this is the ideal choice to tow your trailer with. Since this system does not feature a chain, the hitch is relatively silent. The materials consist of forged steel which adds to the longevity and durability of this product.

In addition, the brackets are universal, which will mean you should not have any issues when it comes to connecting this hitch to your trailer and your vehicle. There are no requirements for an advanced installation process since this unit combines a weight-distribution kit and sway control into one very useful device.

Overall, if you need a hitch which is able to provide superior performance while working silently, then the Husky 32218 is a great system to consider.

Pros
  • The operation is silent
  • A versatile kit that combines a durable weight-distribution kit and sway control into one product
  • Durable and reliable steel-build construction
  • A lightweight option in comparison to many of the other models in this class.
Cons
  • The packaging of the kit is not really good.

6. Andersen Mfg 3350 No Sway Weight Distribution Hitch

  • Unparalleled Sway Control that self-adjusts
  • 2-5/16" ball, universal frame brackets (3 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch & 6...
  • One pin removal from tow vehicle
  • Grease-free system -ball and coupler move as one
  • Doubles as standard ball mount for towing without weight distribution

This Andersen hitch has an even higher capacity than the earlier hitches with 14,000 gross trailer weight (with a classic tongue weight that is 10% from that). This is probably among the simplest units that I have ever seen.

In addition, it is among the quietest as well. When using this hitch while you drive, you literally don’t hear a single sound.

One unique feature that the hitch has is anti-bounce urethane springs which dampen and absorb trailer bounce, which adds a massive amount of smoothness while you are towing.

Although a majority of hitches with solid spring steel bars weigh about 100 pounds, this one is barely 60 pound. When it comes to installing and handling this hitch on your own that makes a big difference.

Also, the actual institution is probably the simplest that I have encountered in a weight distribution hitch. I was finished in only about 30 minutes.

It is among the most expensive hitches that are available in the market currently, and that isn’t too surprising when you consider it is one of the best engineering pieces for its category. Still, this can be considered a drawback by some.

Pros
  • Reduces both bouncing and swaying
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Can also work as a standard ball mount with no weight distribution
  • The Single friction point is able to rotate 360 degrees, with no loosening necessary
  • Simple chain link design
Cons
  • One of the more expensive hitches

7. Pro Series Reese 49902 Complete Round Bar Weight Distribution Kit – 750 lbs. TW

  • Preinstalled and torqued sway control ball and 2-5/16" hitch ball,...
  • Fabricated head and welded hitch bar
  • Includes friction sway control and mounting hardware
  • Limited lifetime warranty

This is very similar to the third hitch in the list that I reviewed. It is a weight distribution system that comes with friction sway control already integrated into it.

A rivet with washers adjusts the head pivoting, and a heavy duty thick bolt does the height adjustment.

The parts are made out of solid steel and are very heavy.

The spring bars are easy to install and provide extra flexibility as well. They are also made out of solid steel.

A heavy-duty steel chain attaches the spring bars to the spring brackets.

Just lower the brackets, hook the chain, and use a pry bar to pull them up once again. It is a very straightforward process.

Pros
  • Comes with a friction sway control unit
Cons
  • Low tongue weight capacity
  • One of the heavier hitches

  • EASY SETUP. This CURT weight distribution hitch comes with snap-up...

Give is quality, you might be surprised to discover that this hitch is actually in the entry-level category.

This is a very reputable product and is featured on various online automotive websites and forums.

The ergonomic towing system of this hitch helps to ensure that the trailer is controlled properly while you are out on the road driving. There are heavy duty 2×2 shanks that are included that fit with class 3, 4, and 5 hitches.

The sturdy spring bars work to guarantee that the load’s weight is distributed properly throughout the trailer and vehicle.

The construction of the hitch is, of course, something that all drivers can trust. It is able to withstand constant usage and harsh conditions.

Its components have all been designed to be used with heavy-duty applications. It is loaded with durability, from its spring bars to the cast heads. This hitch is also powder-coated, to improve its resilience against damage and ruggedness even further. Due to this feature, it can outlast most of its counterparts.

Pros
  • Ideal for heavy-duty applications
  • Support brackets are rugged and adjustable
  • Intuitive and quick installment
  • Engineered with durability, sturdiness, and precision
  • Compatible with various trailer classes
Cons
  • The sway control wings get in the trailer tongue’s way

9. Blue Ox BXW1000 SWAYPRO Weight Distributing Hitch

Blue Ox BXW1000 SWAYPRO Weight Distributing Hitch 1000lb Tongue Weight for Standard Coupler with Clamp-On...
  • Pre-adjusted hitch head, no fine-tuning necessary
  • Sway Prevention
  • Spring steel constrution for a softer, smoother ride
  • No noise
  • Back up without disconnecting

For improved ease-of-use, the weight distribution hitch comes pre-installed.

When the product is installed to a trailer properly, it will eliminate practically any kind of sway, and provide you with a straight line reverse with the vehicle you are driving.

One of the very best things about the model is you can adjust the tension of the chain very easily and provide it with sway control that is more flexible based on the kind of vehicle you are using it with as well as the style of your driving.

The spring bars also offer smooth control over your trailer’s movement, especially on a windy day or when you are negotiating corners. However, the model does come with 2 major caveats. The first one is that it is 46 inches in length, which is very long.

The second one is its price. This is an expensive hitch that budget-minded buyers might not be able to afford. However, it is very easy-t-ease even for beginners and features superior build construction. It has very smooth sway control and it is very easy to attach a trailer up to 10,000 pounds up to the hitch.

Pros
  • No fine-tuning needs. The hitch head comes factory pre-adjusted
  • Easy to install
  • Produces practically no noise
Cons
  • It is expensive

This model is a heavy-duty and compact weight distribution hitch. For durability, it is made out of forged steel. It comes with integrated sway control so you won’t need to buy one separately. It provides a smooth trailer tow no matter what speed you are going.

The 2 5/16 inch hitch ball has also been pre-torque for improved ease-of-use.

The unit also has 2 trunnion bars that provide plenty of clearance for the hitch. That makes the hitch ideal for people who are operating a tall vehicle such as an SUV since it provides plenty of ground and height clearance.

One of the very best things about the hitch is it comes with an adjustable support brack. That allows you to customize the spring bars tension to offer a towing experience that is more flexible. Installation is very easy using the 2 x 2-inch adjustable shank.

Pros
  • Easy to install with the included adjustable shank system
  • Sway control comes integrated so it doesn’t need to be purchased separately
  • Pre-torqued hitch ball
Cons
  • Can get somewhat noisy. However, that can be remedied quickly by applying grease to the hangers

What Is Weight Distribution Hitch?

Weight distribution hitches are simply devices use for temporary towing, and they are used in towing vehicles or trailer.

The main use of a distribution hitch is to prevent a trailer from swaying or swerving, by keeping it smoothly balanced. Furthermore, they are also used to distribute the weight of a load during transportation equally. This device balances the load evenly across all vehicle’s axles.

Do You Need A Weight Distribution Hitch?

You do need a weight distribution hitch if you do tow trailers. In other words, if you tow tons of weight, then you will need this system. In fact, you need to take advantage of the weighted system if:

  • The back of your truck sags when you connect a trailer
  • Your tow vehicle’s headlights point upward
  • Trailer weight is above 50% of your car’s total weight
  • The trailer sways or swerve
  • Having problems steering, controlling, or stopping your vehicle
  • You want to tow the highest capacity accepted by the trailer hitch

How Does Weight Distribution Hitch Work?

The hitch system help prevents the towing vehicle from losing balance or compromising the ability to control the vehicle. The weight distribution hitch achieves this by reinforcing and repositioning the connection between the load and the vehicle: by either moving the connection point lower or higher, the whole system will keep both the vehicle and trailer at a level. The weight of the trailer will also be well balanced within the system’s support base.

To ensure the system is well balanced, you should make sure the vehicle is not sagging, and the weight is evenly distributed across all wheels. By doing this, you will have improved maneuverability and traction.

Weight Distribution Hitch Types

If you Google weight distribution hitch, you will definitely see that there are many brands and types. However, all of them fall under 3 categories, which are:

Round Bar Hitch – These are round sway bars, which are attached to the trailer’s bottom ball mount. This design works very well; however, potholes and bumps may present some problems.

Trunnion Bar Hitch – This type of distribution hitch does not need a clip and offer excellent ground clearance. However, it can be challenging to adjust the head’s height.

Andresen Hitch – The sway bars are replaced with chains and dampers. The chain and dampers help reduce trailer bounce and sway.

Buyer’s Guide: Essential Factors to Consider When Choosing a Weight Distribution Hitch

1. Weight Capacity

One of the most important factor to consider before purchasing this system is weight capacity. It is wise to choose the one that offers more than 50% of the total trailer weight rather than tongue weight. By following this tip, you will have a guarantee of excellent weight distribution and vehicle control.

Tongue weight can vary from 1000 Ibs – 1200 Ibs. Its GTW should range between 10,000 Ibs – 12,000 Ibs. It is recommended to through the manufacturers manual to ensure you have the right type of hitch you need.

2. Installation Ease

You should also consider a system that will be easy for you to install. Remember, to fix this system; it should take you about 30 minutes to one hour. If the installation takes longer, it is not acceptable.

3. Sway Control

The hitch you choose should be able to reduce the possibility of trailer swaying. A swaying trailer is hazardous when driving. It should also prevent the trailer from falling or tipping over when making hard turns. As such, to improve your control, you will need to build a resistance that only a hitch can do.

4. Spring Bar Type

The type of spring bar is another factor to consider before choosing a distributed hitch. Spring bars are available in two basic styles, which are:

Trunnion spring bar – This system gives for increasing the weight rating of the system.
Round spring bar – These offer more clearance space to hook up the trailer.

Both of these systems are advantageous. However, the benefits vary significantly from setup to setup.

5. The Cost

The common law of purchasing any product is quality and durability, and weight distributed hitches are no different. However, the most expensive product on the market does not mean that it is of high quality and will last for long. As such, you should consider choosing from a well-known and trusted brand. It should also have a warranty. If you do this, you do not have to worry about malfunctions.

6. Pre-installation Components

Many hitch brands are equipped with everything that you may need, which means you do not have to buy other additional parts. Therefore, before you buy any product, it is wise to know if they have included all the parts you need.

7. Other Additional Features

When it comes to weight distributed hitch systems, it wise to consider those that offer additional features such as sway control. Therefore, going for a system that offers sway control is a bonus. If by chance you purchase one with no sway control, it is wise to add the system.

Understanding the Weight Measurements

To avoid trailer or weight imbalances, it essential to learn the two types of weight measurements which apply to both the trailer and towing vehicles.

The first is the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). This refers to the whole weight of a trailer, including everything and all components. In other words, the Gross Trailer Weight includes provisions, fuel, cargo, and everything that it either on or used by the trailer. For this reason, you should know that different distribution hitches have different weight capacities. There are those that can support large trailers and those best for small trailers.

The second is Tongue Weight (TW). This refers to the measurements that define if the trailer will sway or dive. This is a variable measurement that includes about 10% to 15% of a trailer’s gross weight and refers to trailer’s total weight, which affects the trailer hitch directly by merely being closer to the hitch rather than the axle’s trailer.

Tongue weight does also refer to the weight loaded on the towing vehicle bed or trunk, close to the trailer hitch.

Therefore, when towing any load, it is essential to know bot gross and tongue weight. This is because it can significantly affect maneuverability, balance, as well as the overall safety of the vehicle. It is important to note that weight distribution hitch is not necessary to all kind of loads. In fact, small loads can work with the ordinary or standard hitches. However, when it comes to loads that are 50% more than the total weight of a car, you will need the weight distributed hitch and the two measurements.

The Components of Weight Distribution Hitch Systems

Similar to any of the other trailer accessories, weight distribution hitches are made up of a number of parts in order for this part to operate. These include the following

1. The Trailer Hitch

The trailer hitch connects to the vehicle. This part is typically comprised of a durable and heavy-duty material such as steel. In addition, some of the trailer hitches come with slot systems which allow for a way to connect the hitch easily and quickly to a vehicle, doing away with having to use additional tools.

2. The Shank

Shanks are usually made from a type of metal rod which performs the function of connecting the ball mount or the equalizer-head to the actual trailer hitch. The shanks come in various drops and sizes which also allow for a way to make adjustments to the weight and the height distribution of the hitch system in association to the actual height of the vehicle.

3. Head Assembly

This part is very important in a weight-distribution system. It connects to the round bars or trunnion bars of the trailer along with an additional trailer hitch to the vehicle. It typically comes with holes that are large along with heavy-duty bolts and nuts to attach the different components together.

4. The Spring Bar

This is a type of stabilizer bar which attaches to your equalizer-head assembly. There are currently 2 spring bar types available. The 1st includes the trunnion bars (square bar), while the 2nd is classified as round bars.

Trunnion bars are typically positioned on 1 side of a weight-distribution system where it performs the function of sliding from the back or the side into a head. Similar to other vehicle parts, trunnion bars within weight distribution systems will have serial numbers and be numbered if the need arises to replace the bar, where the owner will have to find the type of trunnion bar that matches up to their weight-distribution system.

The round bars are held in place using metal clips which slide from a downwards position into a head-assembly system. These round bars are typically suitable for the vehicles with more ground clearance such as the taller SUVs, and the trunnion bars which are usually positioned on one side of these weight-distribution systems are typically used for vehicles such as cars which have a ground clearance that is lower.

5. Lift Bracket

In the majority of the weight-distribution systems, lift brackets are typically made up of a type of chain which connects a spring bar to a trailer. This part is used for stabilization of the system especially when it comes to going around corners. It also assists with removing sway.

How to Install a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Useful Tips and Advice on How to Control the Sway

Sway happens to be a primary hazard when it comes to towing, yet there are a few things the driver is able to do in order to prevent this common issue.

Weight Distribution Inside the Trailer

The load inside the trailer should be balanced while taking into account the overall relationship that occurs between the GTW(Gross Trailer Weight) and the “tongue weight” that should be achieved. The weight of the load needs to be distributed with care, making sure that it is away from the back of the trailer. In addition, the load needs to be secured as the items might roll around which also contributes to swaying.

Avoid Crosswinds

It is important to find out about the weather before towing a load. If there are strong crosswinds on that day it may be better to find a better route or delay the trip. The sway which is a result of a crosswind is extremely hard to control.

Tires with Not Enough Air

It is important to check the tire pressure on the trailer and towing vehicle. When the tire pressure becomes too low, this often also contributes to swaying.

The Length of the Trailer

When towing using a smaller vehicle like an SUV, there are limitations in place that need to be considered. If the driver plans to tow a load that is 3 to 4 times the length of their vehicle, this could spell trouble. It is important to refer to the warning and cautions found in the owner’s manual from the manufacturer.

Inappropriate Driving

It is not a good idea for a driver to totally rely on the technology of their trailer and vehicle in order to keep them safe. The driving style of the driver is also very important. It is important to drive slower and when the need arises to stop or slow down, the brakes should be applied gradually. It is also important to avoid turning the steering-wheel suddenly. If the vehicle starts swaying, avoid speeding up and steering out. In these situations only use the trailer-brakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Sway Control?

Sway control is typically built in most of the weight-distribution systems as this is extremely important. The sway control comes in different types. For example, the anti-sway hitch will correct sway as it starts, while another type may prevent this from starting.

Devices That Lower Sway Once It Has Started

These devices are divided into the dependent sway-control and independent-friction sway-control.

The independent-friction sway control devices consist of a bar which will bolt onto the trailer’s frame. It attaches to the frame and weight-distribution of a trailer, it will provide the tension needed to ensure the trailer stays in straight lines. The telescopic-bar will move out and in. As soon as a trailer begins moving past the straight line, friction pads will stop this telescopic movement while reducing side-to-side movements.

The dependent types of sway controls are one of the parts of a weight-distribution system. When sway starts, the spring bar produces a downward-force which results in frictional resistance inside the brackets that are positioned on either side of the frame of the trailer. This includes steel-on-steel resistance and the resistance of a material which is similar to a brake pad. This resistance is usually sufficient when it comes to ensuring the trailer remains in straight lines.

The Devices That Prevent Sway From Starting

Most of the weight-distribution hitches will have a system that will prevent sway from even starting to begin with.

Certain systems feature sliding devices known as “cams” which will suspend a spring bar which locks it into position. One side of this cam will attach to the frame of the trailer while the other side attaches to a lift bracket. The position of a spring bar is what keeps trailers in straight lines and aligned.

Some weight-distribution hitches will have 4-points of built-in sway control. This usually includes a secured connection inside the head and spring bars which are held very tightly. This will provide enough resistance and will safeguard sufficient tension inside the system which works on preventing sway.

There are also other systems which are reliant on tension in order to ensure the spring bars remain taut. An active sway-control utilizes spring-loaded ball bearings which applies pressure in the detents which keeps the trailer aligned and straight.

How Much Weight Can My Vehicle Tow?

The load leveling hitches are unable to increase the weight amount that a vehicle is able to tow. It does make it safer and the ability to load the trunk too.

Towing capacities of vehicles is a maximum weight that it is able to tow legally and safely. This information is usually provided by the manufacturer in the owner’s manual. Otherwise, the owner can call the dealership that they bought the vehicle from.

The weight capacity is generally calculated using the weight of what will be towed and the overall curb-weight associated with the vehicle. If the load and trailer weight exceeds 85% of the vehicle weight, then it is not safe to tow. It also becomes important to refer to any road-safety laws in the area where the load will be towed in. Once a specified percentage has been exceeded which is in most cases 50 %, a weight-distribution hitch will be a requirement by law.

It is also important to find out whether the engine capacity of the vehicle is high enough in order to tow an additional weight without becoming damaged.

Final Thoughts

From here you now know that weight-distributing hitches become a requirement for the trailers that weigh over 1/ 2 the weight of the towing vehicle. The weight distribution hitches supply a weight displacement that is balanced through the redistribution of the load onto the trailer’s axles. Many drivers come to appreciate this setup when having to drive with a trailer. They usually notice that the ride is more stable and smoother.

Here are the top selections with an integrated sway-control, which you should be thinking about for your trailer. It is always important to consider the important weights that will be factored in in order to get the very most from the weight distributing hitch that you choose. Once installed, you can relax by allowing the hitch to balance your load for a smoother and safer ride.
